What, where & why? ... at this North Staffordshire building of the past
Cliffe Park
Recognise the building on this old postcard?
'Postcard Puzzle from the Past' is a feature on Barbara Adams' afternoon show on BBC Radio Stoke.

She wants your help, stories, tips and suggestions in trying to identify the scenes on them.

Postcard plethora
Listeners to the show, from all across Staffordshire & South Cheshire, frequently send very old topographical postcards to Barbara asking about their exact location, or even who the people are featured on these long forgotten and (probably?) local scenes.

Cliffe Park Hostel....?
Tom Brown wrote in to the show, enclosing this postcard (above) of a youth hostel that he and a friend I stayed in in the late forties.
The note on the card says it's the Cliffe Park Hostel at Rudyard near Leek.
Tom writes.... "I am trying to find if the building is still there, and get some history of it, but have had no luck. Can you help?"

Help for Tom
Cyclists
A blow-up from the postcard of the hostel shows some travellers hitching up their bikes...
Well... can you?
Anyone who visited Rudyard Lake in the post-war years may have seen it - but in which year is the last sighting of it?

Does anyone know the building's history? - such a grand edifice was surely not built originally as a youth hostel...! And what, if anything, is now on the land where it once stood?
Plus, if you have any connections with the youth hostel movement, you may have some tips about how Tom can progress in his quest...

As Lloyd Grossman once said - Over To You.....!

Postcard post
If you think you can help, even with the very slightest of information... or have some pictures that you too want identified, e-mail Barbara with the details. And, thanks!

Your suggestions
quote The hostel stood at the Horton end of Rudyard Lake .. My cousin lives nearby at Shirkley Hall farm .. It was a walkers paradise .. they would have to cross Shirkley Hall Farm and then pass through Barned lea farm in order to get to it ... It was a magnificent place and I think it still stands today quote
Beryl from Lightwood
