County council elections Staffordshire County Council, employing 30,000 people, is responsible for schools, libraries, highways, planning and waste management - and more - across most of the county. Only the city of Stoke on Trent does not come under its rule. Results The Labour group maintained its overall majority at County Buildings but only just. It lost four wards, and now has 32 councillors.
The Conservatives had the most cause to smile as a large swing to them helped them pick up an extra five wards, taking their numbers to 27. The Liberal Democrats dropped two wards overall - and are down to just 2 councillors. That leaves only ward to be decided - as it will be, in a special poll to be called next month.
A special internet site profiles the new electoral map of the county, with full ward results being listed one by one. The service is hosted from the elections-page of the Staffordshire County council website at www.staffordshire.gov.uk.

The other candidates were: Gary Chevin (unaffiliated), Justin Harvey (unaffiliated) and Gary Oliver (unaffiliated). Almost ten thousand people - more than ten per cent - "spoiled" their papers. Officials say a large number of these ballot papers had abusive comments written on them - many others had been simply left blank.
