| | An event aimed at showcasing the work of Staffordshire University's engineering and advanced technology degree students is promising to be out of this world.
The Graduate Exhibition which takes place at Beaconside in Stafford on Friday 16th May is an opportunity for visitors to experience the sights, sounds and technological know-how of the next generation of engineers.
This includes the work of BSc student Rik Turner whose final year project is an interactive multimedia CD to teach the Star Trek language of Klingon.
Rik, a fan of the spaceage TV phenomenon, explained:
"Somebody has already written a Klingon language book and there are audio tapes available so I've used those as samples and recorded them onto computer.
"By looking at the format of other languages CD's and how to teach them, I'm developing the Klingon one."
Media Technology student Sarah Shackleton is also combining her personal interest in archery with her technology skills produce her final year project - a CD which acts as a comprehensive introduction to the sport.
 |
"I've been shooting since I was 14 and have shot for my county and also at national level," said Sarah, who is taking a break from the sport to concentrate on her studies.
The CD contains an introduction, information on the rules and guidelines, how to look after equipment and how to set up.
"I've used video which has been digitised. The basic idea is that the CD is given out at the end of the first lesson to back up what has been taught and as reference for the future."
The exhibition will also feature the work of students from a wide range of degree courses such as Design, Film and Music Technology alongside the more traditional Mechanical and Electronic engineering programmes.
Organiser Liz Thursfield said: "By holding the event on a Friday, we hope to encourage more business people along to see what the students can do. It also gives the students an opportunity to present themselves and their work to potential employers."
"In addition, it is a chance for potential students and their families to visit our state-of-the-art facilities and get a taste of the exciting range of courses on offer which can lead to great jobs in every industry imaginable."
The exhibition is open to visitors between 2pm and 4pm. A trade fair will also form part of the event taking place in the Beacon building on the Stafford Campus on May 16th. | | | |
