Pottermouth - the story

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. When Stoke City were wobbling on the run-in to the 2007/8 season, an anonymous fan left a message on the Radio Stoke answerphone. The rest is history; and one of YouTube's greatest hits...

There's a NEW VERSION recorded by Pottermouth as he looks back on the season that Stoke made it back to the big time - see links links on the right hand side of this page.

***

John Acres, the Radio Stoke football reporter, is not absolutely sure when the message was left on his answerphone.

But it was definitely after the Crystal Palace match, when Stoke had just crashed at home. Stoke were having a terrible run with just one win in the last eight games - and did not seem to be true promotion material...

John recognised the quality of what he heard - an ordinary fan's impassioned plea for more effort from the team, in the form of a self-penned anthem calling up the great icons of the past. It was an effort to inspire the team to remember their heritage.

But who was 'Pottermouth'?

This anonymous City fan only ever left messages beforehand for the Radio Stoke sports programme. He never went live.

John took up Pottermouth's suggestion to "put some music behind it", choosing the stirring sound of orchestration from 'The Planets Suite' by Holst. It was enough to make your goose bumps come up.

On that Friday's 'Praise & Grumble' radio show, the 'battle-cry' was played on the air - and became an instant hit!
Fans loved it - grown men wept.

As happens these days, it was immediately placed on the web and it started to get plays right across the world...
And what's more, that Saturday Stoke won, beating Coventry away. The magic was working.

YouTube

No one is quite sure which City fan decided it needed even more exposure, but some fans were getting very frustrated that they could not download it onto podcasts or mobile phones (BBC website rules do not allow some items to be made available in that way).
So, inevitably, the audio was lifted; and Pottermouth's Battle Cry was suddenly available on YouTube.

Astonishingly, it got 10,000 hits within 24 hours.

Back to Radio Stoke....

Back at Radio Stoke, they saw the phenomenon grow and were determined that there should be an official version.
Within days of the unofficial version, an official version - with accompanying slide show showing all the icons mentioned in the anthem - had been created.
BBC YouTube managers were at first a bit doubtful, but decided it had enough originality to warrant a spin.
Within hours, it was the top-rated piece on the BBC YouTube output.

It registered an amazing 25,000 hits in three days - and national TV, national radio, and the local newspapers all were queuing up to reflect the phenomenon.

Run in

But - most importantly - would the magic keep on working?

Stoke City Chief Executive Tony Scholes certainly thought so. He insisted that the Battle-Cry be played out over the tannoy before the next game, a crucial match against Bristol City to inspire both fans and the team.
Stoke won....!

By St George's Day, the video had amassed 35,000 hits - and fans all over the area were asking if the piece could be released on CD...
Pottermouth's dialect catchphrase, "Do eet fur..." became heard all over the city.

Colchester

But could the Pottermouth spell continue?
The next test was Colchester away. Though Colchester were already relegated, they were playing for pride, at the last game in their present and historic stadium before moving on to a new ground.

Stoke won again, by the single goal... The magic had produced three wins in a row!

Finale

But if Pottermouth had wanted one thing only, he wanted the team to surge forward to promotion.
Whoever this anonymous man is, he was bound to be on tenterhooks on May 4th, as Stoke took on Leicester in the last game of the season. The team had to draw, to be sure of promotion.

It was an incredibly nail-biting game, but, in the end, all Stoke fans got what they wanted - an automatic promotion place, and a first-ever elevation to the Premier league.

Salute

Whatever magic Pottermouth possesses, it had worked.
Since his anthem had been played out on Radio Stoke, the team had turned from wobblers into victory players - with four wins on the trot!

And the video had become a YouTube phenomenon, with, eventually, over 55,000 hits on BBC You Tube (plus another 30,000 unofficial versions!).

Pottermouth, we salute you.

LYRICS

This is a call to the men in red and white
A heart felt battle cry
As you enter the crucial fight
A final inspiration to lead you into war
A chance to remind you of what you're fighting for

Cause as you reach for the Premiership
As you sweat blood and tears
You carry us all on your backs
All our hopes and fears

So do it for the Potteries
Do it for all of us
Do it for Josiah Wedgwood, and for a PMT bus

Do it for Nigel Johnson, do it for Sir Stan
Do it for singing toddlers and for my old man

Do it for Trentham Gardens
Do it for Mow Cop
Do it for Pat McGarry and his paper shop

Do it for Wrights Pies
Do it for oatcakes
Take us to the Prem whatever it takes

Do it for the blokes as call each other duck
Do it for Andy in his dumper truck
Do it for the man who shouts "Sentinel"

Do it for lime kiln bank
Do it for Nick Hancock
Do it for Sam Plank

Do it for the Boothen End and its deafening sound
Do it for Denis Smith and the old Victoria ground
Do it for Alan Hudson
Do it for Gordon Banks
Do it for the glory and our eternal thanks

Do it for Meir tunnel,
For Slash - Sweet Child of Mine
Do it for Royal Doulton
Do it for the old mines

Do it for going up Hanley duck
Do it for Mark Stein
For Waddo for Ritchie and Ian in Scholar Green

Do it for Longton bus station
For the shirt on yer back
Do it for owd Grandad Piggott
And for Club-paper Jack

And we'll be with you, every step along the way
Down the Brit, United and Arsenal, every week on Match of the Day
Do it for the Stokies around the world - near and far
Do it, do it Pulis, please do it
Orate? Tararrrrrrr!

Ali Bushnell (Greatbatch)
Well, what can I say? As most of you know, I have supported Vale for as long as I can remember but even I was reduced to tears when I heard Pottermouth's battle cry! Congratulations Stoke City - you have done the city of Stoke-on-Trent proud. I wish you the very best of luck in the Premier League. I saw one of the students at Coventry University walking across campus yesterday wearing his Stoke City shirt with pride - it took guts to do that in Coventry but he was so proud and so he should be. Well done again.
