Mavis the mini

It's always hard work learning to drive, but with a grumpy dad and an ailing old mini, Jill's chances were scuppered. Or were they?

Jill is 22-years-old and lives in Congelton in Cheshire. She is studying for her MA in Broadcast Journalism at Staffordshire University.

She enjoys going to the theatre to see musicals.

Transcript:

What’s small, brown, and gets stuck on speed-bumps?

Mavis the mini.

I spent six months bumping that poor car around the streets of Congleton, with my Dad cringing in the front seat.

On my first lesson we took a wrong turning - “You said turn left!” “I didn't mean here, you daft child!”

We ended up in the narrowest road in Congleton, where I did my first seven point turn and Mavis lost her front registration plate.

Two weeks later, a speedy reversal from the garage took the passenger wing mirror off. No wonder Dad was stressed when I was driving his treasured mini.

His feet'd be going along with mine, twitching for the brake every time there was a car in sight. “What speed limit do you think we're in child?”
“30, Dad.”

“And how fast are you going child?” “29 Dad, it’s a mini, it won't go up a hill any faster”.

When I finally went for my test I was nervous . . . driving a car with five gears makes a big difference. I chatted to the examiner, and mentioned how much I really liked driving Mavis – and he said, “Oh, I leant to drive in a mini, they're great, aren't they?” and I just thought “Yes, I've passed!"
