How do you start to sum up Nigel Johnson? His voice is synonymous with BBC Radio Stoke and Stoke City Football Club. He's been there with us through thin and thinner, a constant companion during the lows, dark hours, and sporadic high moments that life as a Stoke City fan brings.
Like a loyal dog sitting at your feet by the fireside Nigel is someone who you can rely and depend upon - if Stoke City are playing, he'll be there. His voice rebounds around the room bouncing off the walls in your kitchen, lounge, bedroom, or car. Even when you're listening to The Potters in the bath Nigel is there with you.
But then like all good commentators he frustrates you too. You're listening to him because you're not there yourself.
What's the score Nigel? Where's the ball? Give me some good news. Why don't you just ask the manager a straight question? And then the headmaster within him comes out and he uses a word you just don't understand.
But you don't want anyone else to tell you the Stoke score, you want Nigel. You don't believe it if it isn't Nigel. Nigel Johnson's the one. He's Mr Stoke City. Isn't he?
The thing is with Nigel it all started 35 years ago with cricket. And Port Vale. Can you imagine? In fact if the unions had got their way he wouldn't have been allowed on air at all. Then where would we be?
The Dumbledore of BBC Radio Stoke
He's like the Dumbledore of BBC Radio Stoke. Imposing figure, a tad forgetful, windswept hair.
But it's his voice that does it. When you listen to Nigel commentating on Stoke City it's like he's your dad.
If you're at the match with him scores of people come up to you all wanting a word, all wanting to know what's going on, all wanting to know what he thinks. And many of us want to put a question in his mouth for when he grills the manager after the latest defeat.
Everyone's got a Nigel Johnson story - a time in your life when you were in some sort of fix or some remote place of the earth and you desperately want to know how the lads have got on and someone else is listening to Nigel Johnson for you. Or you get home from the match and the first thing you hear is "Nigel said…"
So well done on reaching 1500 games Nige. Thanks for the last 35 years at BBC Radio Stoke. And thanks for making us happy.
James O'Hara

Well Done Nigel. A truly professional broadcaster who makes every game vital listening - especially away games when you are the "eyes and ears" for those stuck at home. The play off semi at Ninian Park is my favourite bit of commentary ever.

Well done Nigel, I have always enjoyed your commentaries, you have the ability to let your listener know where and who has the ball. Whenever we score you will always describe exactly how it happens, as a listener that is the first thing we want to know. I have seen you a few times at various functions but never had the opportunity to say what an exceptionally good commentator you are. but this is an ideal opportunity. Keep up the good work, especially now as I cannot get down to watch as much as I would like. A 40+ yrs Stokie

No one can commentate on football on the Radio like Nigel Johnson. All Stoke fans have been very lucky to have such a great commentator covering our team. Listening to the games without Nigel just wouldn't be the same. Thank you and carry on your good work Mr Stoke City.

As someone who has worked with Nigel, I think James O'Hara has summed him up perfectly. I have many happy memories of working on a Saturday afternoon in the sports studio and listening to Nigel's commentaries and making sure we got his reports on the goals on the radio - such great and happy memories. I can only add my heartfelt congratulations for clocking up 1500 reports. Nigel is the best and I'm very proud to know him.

Congratulations on your achievement Nigel - a legend!

Congratulations Nige, you are the voice of Stoke City and a fantastic achievement. A memory I have is the only time I can rememeber when the Stoke fans wanted your voice turned off. It was the play-off semi final against Cardiff away and around 10,000 Stokies were at the Britannia to watch on the big screen. There was no commentary so the Stoke officials decided to put your commentary over the action. Unfortunately you were about 1/2 a second ahead in transmission and therefore everything you said came true on the screen, we knew the shot was wide before we saw it. I just remember all the crowd shouting 'get it off', priceless !!!
Glenn
Nigel, Congratulations on your 1500th commentary. You bring a piece of home to me every Saturday in Canada.

Russ Blurton
Nigel, as a lifelong stoke supporter, you have been the voice of my club since my first match in 1977 against Blackpool at home. Sadly on that as on so many occasions since disappointment followed with a 2-1 home defeat. However being positive who will forget your commentary at the Wembley finals, play off final, macari's championship season and the play offs that followed under him. Your passion for Stoke and supporting it's events like for the supporters club should be recognised and you are rightly being celebrated as "the voice of Stoke City" Congratulations Nigel from me and the rest of the Dutton family.
Dave Harrison
Heres to the next 1500 games - Thanks and well done!

I anyone wants to know just how good a commentator Nigel is try watching the TV when Stoke City is being televised (and you cannot be there!), turn the sound off and listen to Nigel’s commentary on Radio Stoke. You know EXACTLY what is going to happen about half a second before it does. He is 100%. Well done Nigel. You are the best.

Hi Nigel , Just a quick note to congratulate you on the occasion of your 1500th game.I am in awe of the consistent and professionl manner in which you deliver all things Stoke City from what I can imagine are "varied" facilities. It is always a pleasure to see you at some far flung outpost of the football league and indeed at the Mathews Foundation events.keep up the good work and I hope that your Premiership style is replicated on the pitch . Enjoy the day.
Joe Dawson

Nige - as a member of the RAF and, therefore, a long-term exile, I have been listening on the web to your commentary for as long as it has been available. Many thanks for the memories. The most bizarre of which was listening to the Oulare goal in Cardiff, while sitting in an Operations room in Kabul, Afghanistan! I'll be listening again next week and for the next 6 months from Basrah. Many best wishes. Rock_Ape
Dr_Whom
Nice One Nige, I'll always remember straining to get Radio Stoke coverage in Manchester during our playoff glory against Cardiff - I could only really tell how we were doing by the pitch of your voice. I still managed to guess the right result though. Nice one.

A truly magnificent achievement. In the days when honours are handed out to average sportsmen, Nigel Johnson deserves a knighthood. Well done and thanks for the memories.
AnarchicAlan
Congratulations - or maybe commiserations! It's a joy to hear a PROPER presenter on the radio, instead of the aloof, patronising Acres. He could learn a great deal from you. Here's to another 1500!
Matt Mellor
Congratulations Nigel. I've grown up listening to your commentary of Stoke - long may it continue.
Phil Rawlins
Nigel, Many congratulations on 1,500 Not Out! Thanks for all the great commentaries and the wonderful memories you have compiled. I certainly know that, as an "exile" Saturday's wouldn't be the same without your dulcite tones on the "worldwide web". Thanks again Nige (heads go up!)

Lost count of the number of times I hung on your every word when I was a kid .... and now as an exile I hang on your every word until the Hilton Park services on the M6 where reception breaks down entirely. Congratulations, Nigel.
David A
Nigel, from skiving on my saturday job at woolworths to spend afternoons with you in the stockroom during the 1980s, to listening now via the web down here in London, you've always been part of my stoke city experience. Thanks. If only everyone involved with the club was as dedicated!
Jim Cook-Martin
I think the world of you Nigel! Many, many thanks for your excellent commentaries over the years. You have always had that knack of painting a clear, concise verbal picture of every Stoke City game you have covered! God Bless you Nige!!
Phil Johnson
He's only gone and scored !! A line I will always remember.
Peter_D
Nigel, congratulations on this remarkable achievement of reaching 1500 games. We've shared some great moments together, the emphasis on the word, "we", and some sad ones too. To most exiles and supporters unable to get to away games, the voice of Nigel Johnson IS SCFC. Your every word is devoured by passionate souls eager to share your attendance at the game, the tone of your voice tells us how well we are really doing. Your amusing quips keep us smiling, ably abetted by 'Mumbling Mick' who has, for me, become part of a great duo. Great stuff, sir. You are a true Stoke City gem and a fine gentleman. Thank you for all you've done for us supporters over the years including all the hard work you have done for the Sir Stan cause. May I wish you good health and pass on my thanks to your family for sharing you with us. Their sacrifice has been our gain. Respects and regards, Peter.
Phil Johnson
He's only gone and scored !! A line I will always remember.

I'll never forget the night in Cardiff when your commentary made me have one of the best mentals I've ever had in my own house
Adam Hindhaugh
Hi Nigel - Met you a few times at Stoke away matches with Paul Bradbury when we used to take photographs. Just to say congratulations - Ive loved listening to you over the years from a young lad - You are MR Stoke City and lets hope there are many games to come. adamhindhaugh@hotmail.com
StokieSteve.
Absolutely fantastic achievement, Nige. Your "heads go up .... " statement must rank as one of the best recognized on Local radio. Here's to celebrating your 1500 with a win by The Potters.
John Keates
Well done Nige!! Lets hope we have another 1,500 commentaries! I wonder if it will be Nifty Nigel’s notorious nouns noticeable on Saturday when he says that his little legs are going like pistons running like a little train in his red and white stockings through the centre cirtle towards the inside right channel when heads go up – and the balls in the back of the net!!
Nick from Cadiz
Top drawer milestone for a top drawer professional. Long may you continue Nigel. Since BBC Radio´s broadcasting restrictions kicked in I can´t listen to you on the internet any more and my Saturday afternoons in Andalucia are all the poorer for that. 1500 games underlines the class of this man. Nick.
Bill H.
Keep up the good work Nigel, Saturdays would not be the same without you and I always smile when you tell us what colour stockings the players are wearing :-)
Jack Merritt
Well done Nigel, & a fine achievement. This will probably not be surpassed. You're commentaries of Stoke F.C. matches have always been done in a professional & unbiased manner, & are a model for others to follow. The best of luck for the future, & may we have you with us for a lot more seasons yet. I hope that when you decide to retire, you are given Honorary membership of our football club.
Arthur Williams
I can't express how much I appreciate your broadcasts Nigel. I'm now a 24hr Carer and I can't make to the matches but your commentaries make up for that. Thanks Again Nige

Have been listening to local radio since it first arrived on the scene and in terms of football Nigel has been the jewel in the crown Non Stokies would admit that his even handed reporting is a credit to his profession Many thanks Nigel
Kevin Hassall
It has all been said Nigel but happy to add my congratulations to those many kind words already written. Mr.SCFC I thank you!
Oslostokie
In the 37 years that I have been supporting Stoke, the one constant throughout that time has been Nigel Johnson. To hear Nigel on either the radio or over the worldwide web is like putting on a comfy pair of slippers. Often taken for granted but quickly missed when not around any more. Hopefully this is a long time ahead. "Hard and low, over the bar" is just about my favourite quote.
Wayne Roberts
Congratulations Nige. At least you've had the pleasure of seeing Stoke when they had a great side.Lets hope we get there again some day.
Bryan Kinsella
A pleasure doing listening with you.

I first met Mr Johnson when he was a Headteacher at Grange School and I was a Heating Engineer on the City Works Dept. He his what I called an old fashion Head who appreciated workman going into his school to carry out repairs. In my case it was when his boiler had burst and we would work through the night if necessary to keep his school open. I have shaken his hand on many occasions since and I congratulate him on reaching this milestone Barry Roden Pipemaster Ltd

Laurie Crouch

Mark Birkin
Congratulations on reaching an unbelievable milestone. First of all i have so many memories. The first memory really of stoke city was as a child. my parents wouldn't let me go to stoke to watch the mighty potters. However, my dad would listen to the radio to get his regular updates, not only from the potters but also the other local teams. My first real memory was listening to you which added to the excitement to my first game to watch the team i love now. Some of the famouse phrases such as Stockings when addressing socks. and possibly my favorite one is 'and the balls in the back of the net'. Any way nidge, many, many congratulations on this fine achievment i'm surprised you dont look 200 years old from the grief us stokies have had to put up with. best wishes Mark Birkin
Tom Dodd
My favourite Nigel moment was listening to him commentate on a home win over Sheff Wed (boxing day?) 2003. I went absolutely mad when we won, must to the benusement of the locals... I was in a 'net cafe in a tiny river town in upper Amazonia at the time. Also met him and Mrs Johnson when my Dad translated for the Spanish press during the Stoke v Valencia pre season match a couple of years ago. Both took the time to have a chat. Here's to the next 1500, Tom.
ANDREW

Congratulations, Nige, and thanks for your descriptive commentaries. Would be lost without your Away Match commentaries.
John Smith
Thank you for being the voice of the airwaves, when we wanted to be there, but couldn't. Always fair, always accurate, always saying it right. There were times when we moaned at him, because the reality was different than what we wanted. he made it that real.... so at 4.50 pm, will it be Jolly Johnson juxtapositioning his jargon as he justly jetisons his judgements... well done Nigel
ian
well done nige, keep up the good work!
lee roberts

Many congratulations Nigel, just think if you'd have done a gold bullion heist 35 years ago you'd be out now and able to buy us a striker with the proceeds.

Birches_Head_Potter
Well done mate, top bloke - wish you all the best for the future
Peter Trippier
from someone who lives 200 miles away, I'd like to say thanks for the memories ... and many more to come. Radio Stoke brings the match to those who live too far to get to every game.
OldStokie
Well done Nige. Have you got a stock of those coats or was it given to you by Methuselah? You were almost responsible for my early demise in those last few seconds on the Plymouth game. I'd jumped up in joy cus I thought we'd scored. I'll hit you around the head with my flat cap the next time I see you. Seriously, I can't imagine a time at Stoke without you. You've been there with us through thick and thin and I don't see you as anything other than a True Stokie. May I wish you many more games and lots of good health. OS.
Lee
Top bloke and commentator. Loved listening to the commentary down the years. Some great moments and memories. Good luck!
StokiePaul
Congratulations Nigel, all the best for the future.
David Holton
Nigel - you're a star and are the only "voice of Stoke City". Thanks so much for what you've done.
Debby (AKA DamonHilllsEyebrow)
Well done 'Our Nidge' forever being the voice of all that is Stoke City. 'Heads go up' 'And the supporters in the away end are bobbing up and down like corks on the sea' 'Stoke City in their white stockings' classic, classic lines!!! We'll be with you, every step along the way. xxxxxxxxxxxx
Ian Sumnall
Nice one Sir! Nige used to teach me at junior school in Madeley many moons ago. Congrats Nige, heres to another 1500
Craig Urwin
I've listened to your commentary on BBC Radio Stoke for 19 years since I watched my first Stoke game. Your commentary has been excellent and your personality really comes across as a Stoke fan but also a football fan. I would hate to think of anyone else providing Stoke City's radio coverage (so stop hogging 22.5 mins of each half Acres!!) well done Nige - heres to another 1500 games!
Paul & Lesley Lewis
All praise and no grumble for Sir Nigel.
Chris Holton
Having moved away to university I'm having to listen to more games than I would otherwise watch, but it's not so bad when I hear such familiar phrases as "red & white stockings", "heads go up... and the ball's in the back of the net!", and of course the terrible puns: "will it be the potters proudly purring, or the Gills providing the thrills?"! Quality stuff Nige!
Peter Sherwood
Congratulations Nigel on commentating on so many games for the Potters. Your name is synonymous with Stoke, long may it continue. Keep up the good work.
Lee
Thanks for all the work you have put in over the years Nigel. I have listened to your commentary for away games over the years.I have to say that it has become part of my weekend and occasional evening routine and is one that I would love to see continue for years to come. Thanks again Nige'!
Lisa Cobden
Congratulations Nigel, I don't get chance to listen to many of you commentaries as I'm always at the games, but I have had the pleasure of been present at many of the Supporters Club "do's" that you have chaired. You are true Gent which in this day and age is a rarety.

hi mr johnson has my form teacher at seabridge juniors 1972 1 was 10/11 years old, do you remember stopping me from playing for newcastle school boys because of a austrian project and made me stay in every playtime to practise my handwriting and also stopped me playing for the school team , i never forgot you, and with being a mad stoke fan and a season ticket holder i dont have to listen to you, thank god
Angela Smith
It seems like only yesterday tha I was with you commenting on some of those great matches from the past. You have been a great servant to radio Stoke and I can honestly say that it has been a great pleasure to listen to you and to know you over the years. Thanks for all the memories Nige. In my head, every Stoke moment is narrated by you!
Mark Boulton
Living in the USA, it's most comforting to wake up on a Saturday and listen to Mr Johnson (even if Stoke's performances aren't always as comforting). I think he echoes the fans frustrations and occasional high points. Well done and keep grilling the manager(whoever it might be).
Adam Wootton
Your commentary is magnificent, be it that James O'Connor goal against Cardiff in the play-offs or the recent 'Stoke can't get through this yellow brick road' it had never been more than top class. Congratulations.
Keith and Nathan Farrell
You like us have had to put up with some torrid times at Stoke, but the few good matches make it all the more worthwhile. Well done Nigel, keep it up for many more years. You are a local treasure.

Congratulations on the milestone Nigel. Best wishes for the future.
GuernseyDave
Take care and here's to many more matches listening to your commentary
Ivan Coomer
2 or 3 years ago, Nigel was kind enough to show me how the broadcasts hang together when made from the Britannia. Stoke were playing Bradford, and I had the pleasure of listening on headphones just as Stoke scored! My leap of delight nearly took Nigel off the air,as all the cables leapt with me!! We should all show our appreciation, too, for the wonderful Mrs Johnson, as Nige travels the length and breadth of the country -Home Park to the Stadium of Light - to bring us commentary on his beloved team. Must mention too Nigel`s commentary on Sir Stan`s funeral. To keep emotion in check and at the same time deliver a description of events as he did that day was, in my opinion, a wonderful achievement. Thank you Nigel!!
Mr T Bath

Hi Nige as someone who has only seen one Stoke game ever (1971 vs Arsenal), it is you, Radio Stoke and the Oatcake who help me to feel part of the Stoke supporters family. I'll never forget dancing around the office here in the USA when we scored against Cardiff in the playoff second leg! Great Job - Well Done and Keep It UP!!
Will Baker
keep going Nige.
