I am an Englishman living in Sydney Australia. I met Gordon Mitchell at Northolt last September and as a result wrote a letter to Aeroplane Monthly regarding a posthumous knighthood for Mitchell. This has resulted in an enormous response from all over the world but my reply from Tony Blair was redirected to the Ministry of Defence. I had a most civil reply from Alistair Boyd of the Civilian Honours Unit, who wrote: 'There is no doubting the contribution made by the Spitfire aircraft during wartime but as Mr. Mitchell died in 1937 it would not be possible for him to be considered for an award now.' Why not? At this moment Sir Mick Jagger is jumping around on a stage in Sydney. It could be argued that Reginald Mitchell contributed more to the survival of the British race than an elderly rocker in tight pants. All those in favour of a gong for RJ say aye.

Are we as a country any further forward on recognising the fact that RJ Mitchell was probably 'The Person' who saved Europe from the Nazis? Where is the posthumous knighthood he so richly deserves!

I saw the comment that "This Ruddy Plane" is almost mythical now .There was nothing "Mythical" about the Spitfire .It is ,& will always be "Legendry" .
Entertainers like Shakespeare & Co. have no place in our history of survival . I admire all holders of decorations for bravery ,including my late grandfather , but I feel that these people performed incredibly brave actions in localised battles .

Is there a record or information that Mitchell's design of the spitfire plane came about in a dream he had on how to approach the design or making of this plane... anything about a dream he had that led to this?

I have always believed that the design came a seagull. At least the wings. I suppose it was the Leslie Howard movie "Spitfire" which planted that idea. In one scene, Mitchell is studying gulls by the ocean and is apparently deeply engrossed over their soaring and gliding finesse. The wings of a Spit' do resemble those of a gull. Just a thought.

I wonder if you have any information on where Reginald John Mitchell, the inventor of the Spitfire aircraft, is buried and how to get there. I have found some information that he is buried at Stoneham Cemetry which is in Hampshire but I would be grateful if you could confirm this if possible.

Can you tell me, are there any plans to broadcast the program on R J Mitchell nationwide that was shown BBC West Midlands Sunday 21st March 2004?
Or is there any other way you know of I could get to see it?
I am very interested in Mitchell's engineering achievements, and would be so fascinated to see this program.

ANSWER Hi. Apparently, if you can email or write a request to Paula Richardson in the Inside Out Programme office, she'll be able to send them a tape. Likewise anyone else. Apparently, it's a standard procedure.- HOST

Hi I enjoyed your piece on Reginald Mitchell, the inventor of the Spitfire.
My interest was sparked by my father-in-law, Arthur Mitchell, who is now 86 years old. Arthur lives in Ireland, but was in the British Army, and saw service in N. Africa during the second World War. On a recent trip to Ireland with my wife, Elaine (Arthur's daughter) , Arthur said that he was related to the inventor of the Spitfire. He did not have any details, but is it possible that Reginald Mitchell was his Uncle??
My only other piece of information is that Arthur Mitchell's mother's name was Elsie Nicholls. Could you give any assistance here, or point me in the direction of someone who could?
Arthur's wife (Betty) died in 2002. They had three daughters. Many thanks,
Dr Jimmy Ennetts

MY BROTHER-IN-LAW, THE LATE LT. R.J.STURGES RNVR JOINED THE NAVY AS A VOLUNTEER RATING IN 1941 AND BECAME A PETTY OFFICER PILOT, LATER COMMISSIONED,
HE WAS A LT. RNVR, FLYING OFF H.M.S. ATTACKER, WHEN HE WAS AWARDED THE D.S.C WHEN, WHILST FLYING A SEAFIRE, HE "AIMED FOR THE WATER INSTEAD OF THE SHIP" AFTER HIS AIRCRAFT WAS SHOT UP.
HE USED TO SAY TO ME, WHEN I WAS SMALL "THE SEAFIRE WAS A SEAGOING SPIT;WHEN YOU SAT IN HER, SHE BECAME PART OF YOU". I REMEMBER THAT CLEARLY.
HE LOVED THE SPITFIRE, AND, BEING A SAILOR, HE LOVED THE SEAFIRE EVEN MORE. HE WAS IN HIS TWENTIES; I WAS LESS THAN TEN.HE WAS MY HERO THEN, AND IN MY MEMORY, HE STILL IS.

Mitchell's Son.
Authentic details of the life and work of R.J.Mitchell can be found in a 320 page illustrated book by me, his son, Dr. Gordon Mitchell, entitled "R.J.Mitchell - Schooldays to Spitfire". Price £18.99 which includes p & p of £3.56, obtainable from Tempus Publishing Ltd, The Mill, Brimscombe Port, Stroud, Gloucs. GL5 2QG (Tel. 01453 883300). This is the 3rd Edition of this book, published in 2002.

One of the contributors to the book is a famous Battle of Britain pilot, Air Commodore Alan Deere DSO OBE DFC in which he states "There can be no doubt that victory in the Battle of Britain was made possible by the Spitfire. Although there were more Hurricanes than Spitfires in the battle, the Spitfire was the RAF's primary weapon because of its better all - round capibility. The Hurricane alone could not have won this great air battle, but the Spitfire could have done so. That I am alive today to pen these few words is not so much due to my much - publicised luc! k, as to the durability of this supreme fighter. R.J.Mitchell is a man to whom we Spitfire pilots owe so much".

RJ Mitchell
RJ Mitchell is rightly remembered as the designer of the Spitfire, but he should also be held up as an example to all cancer sufferers. In 1933 he was diagnosed with cancer of the rectum.
He had to have a colostomy. This meant he went back to work with a colostomy bag (that's a bag of poo). Not only did he design the Spitfire while always wearing this, but he learnt to fly himself and took part in numerous sports.
Now that's a special kind of courage!
For some years maintained a short biography on Mitchell on my website, updating it as new information became available.
How about getting your collegues at BBC television to show the film "First of the Few" about Mitchell to celebrate his being elected the most famous midlander?

greatest midlander
I am writing to tell you how pleased I am that RJ Mitchell won the prestigious award of the greatest midlander.
Actually I am his great-granddaugter!!! I voted 30 times for him as I know from my grandfather (Gordon Mitchell) how important this was, and how much it means to both my grandfather, and RJ's Mitchells memory.
I hope too that one day, I will be able to make the impact and do something special for the nation just as he did.
Thank you to all that voted.!

greatest midlander?
I cannot believe reginald mitchell is the greatest. i'm not against a scientist/inventor being thought of as great - but was he a genius like Shakespeare? - or did he possess great bravery in defending his fellow man (like Jack Baskeyfield VC)?
It's a bit sentimental I think, all based on that ruddy plane ... whihc is almost mythical now!

I think it should be possible for the government to approach The Queen with a view to awarding him a baronetcy, which is presumably within her gift, even if it was awarded posthumously. In that event his son would inherit the baronetcy, which maybe he deserves in recognition of the effort he has put in to recognition of the inventor of the Spitfire.

Have Your Say

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS. THIS BOARD IS NOW CLOSED.

My Dad flew Spitfire Mk1, Mk V, MK IX, and Finally Mk XIVe. He subsequently after the war flew Vampires , T33 and F 86 Sabres, but of all the aeroplanes he ever flew the Spitfire was in his opinion without doubt the best. As a radio control modeller, the Spitfire is also the most manoeuvrable model I have ever flown. So there is more than myth to say the Spitfire is pure poetry in design elegance and beauty which will never be equalled. It is quite simply sublime perfection!

When i see the people who have been knighted and learn that it is unlikley that R J Mitchell will ever be knighted it makes me very sad indeed at the unfairness of it all . DJ Freeman

Enjoyed your article re Mitchell. Maybe you remember Spitfires built at Castle Bromwich, which boasted an aerodrome in those days. I was born Nr. Coleshill.

Re Jim Mitchell (artist)Jim was my Head of Art at Darlaston Community school (Walsall) between 1979-85. He is a top quality aviation artist, but also an extremely good landscape watercolourist too. Two of my abiding memories of A level Art were: Jim painting a Lancaster over Berlin for the retirement of one of out department heads and 2. helping him in some small way construct a firing flintlock pistol for use on his "Sealed Knot" days :)

B Avery/F Davey -re the supposed "Sir" Dennis Mitchell - I was accosted by this same man this afternoon in Plymouth city centre, citing the same story of his knighthood, Spitfire planes etc etc. He also produced the ID and I noticed the address is very close to where I live - I will check him out.

stacey ashfield
i reccommend you watchthe first of the few....1942 b and w film.highlights the beggining of the making of the spifire

For B AveryI too have been spoken to by this man, as have several of my friends. The story is always very much the same. I can only find one Sir Dennis Mitchell and he was a retired Air Commandor who died about 3 years ago. One additional thing, a person he approached said he produced a Passport showing the 'Sir' on it. All very curious.

B Avery
I met a man yesterday who claims to be RJ Mitchell's son. He was very convincing, calling himself Sir Dennis Mitchell. He says he was knighted as a result of missionary work he undertook in Africa. He also said that he is 78 years old and was 7 or 8 when his father died in the garden of their home. He is living in Plymouth and says that his mother went on to be a matron as several of the local hospitals here, she is now no longer alive. I have been trying to find any reference to a brother of Dr Gordon Mitchell but have so far been unsuccessful, can anyone give me any information as to whether there is any truth in this man's claims?

Name me any fighter aircraft that stirs the soul like a spitfire banked in a turn at full throttle and i'll build it personally.R.J's creation can only be described as a ballerina on steroids.

I am wondering if anyone is aware of other paintings of RJ Mitchell besides spitfires .. I have a london scene of whitechapel road and the signature on the bottom is RJ Mitchell.DOes anyone know if there is a connection.I would be very interested to find out. (Oil painting on canvas from tankerton whitstable ct5 2ds) any help would be appreciated. joe.trapper@gmail.com

Jerome Brown
RJ Mitchell was played by Leslie Howard in the 1942 film 'Spitfire'. In the movie RJ watches seagulls landing with spread wings, giving him the idea of the broad 'bird wing' like feature of the spitfires wings. This contributed to the tighter turning of the Spitfire when in combat with a Meschersmitt 109 ( it would seem). Incidentally both fine combat aeroplanes. An excellent film also 'Battle of Britain' another excellent film , with a scene where Herman Goerring is asking his Luftwaffe fighter pilots what they needed to win the war in the air. " A squadron of Spitfires " was the reply!

I have admired the work of the genius R.J. Mitchell for most of my life, and feel it is a complete disgrace that nothing has been done to recognise what he did, not only his own sacrifice, but in freedoms name.I would call for a special day to mark this great man, I call for an R.J. Mitchell day, and to hell with the politically correct brigade.A true HERO who gave his life for freedoms sake.Raginald J Mitchell, I salute you.

Has anyone researched Mitchell family history to see whether RJ was in any way descended from Telford's celebrated Invernessshire trainee: Joseph Mitchell, famed for his Rly building, bridges etc who was born 8.11.1803 & died c 1884 ?

As this post was updated last in 2006, I hope that one of the Mitchell line will respond. As I understand it my mothers side of the family (Mould) has some connection to the Mitchells, I have never investigated exactly how until now. My grand parents have passed away so I cannot ask.I am trying to find more family tree history for Hilda, Eric, Doris, and William Mitchell and also from Florence Daysons side too.Can anyone, hopefully from the Mitchell side help? Thanks Paul

I am Reg Mitchell's nephew, son of George William Mitchell (Billy) the youngest of the brothers. I was pleased to see that there was both interest in the Spitfire and my artwork on this webpage. Having only just found the page , I note that there are many questions which I could answer which have been asked. In response to the queries about my artwork, I remain busy, but now tend to concentrate on book illustration, designs for ceramics ,medals, coins , and basically whatever my agent sends me.Sadly, the younger generations have little interest in or knowlege of, such distant events as the Battle of Britain or even World War Two.They have become as remote as the Boer War was for us, I suppose! To the numerous people who claim to have distant relationship with RJ Mitchell, I can only recommend my cousin Gordon's splendid book which gives a bit of a breakdown of the family. I do not believe that there were any Dorset connections- research a while back seemed to indicate Yorkshire as an area of origin.Perhaps the most interesting momento which I posess from that time are RJ's flying gloves (he was learning to fly shortly before his death)which he gave to my father, Billy Mitchell.

helen holdcroft
Like Dee French I whave been unable to find detailed information about J W (Jim) Mitchell, artist and nephew of RJ, on the internet. I can advise that he has exhibited in London, Manchester and Derby. He is mainly known for his paintings of planes, but also paints landscapes and narure. I have a lovely original oil painting by him entitled "the Christmas Carriage" the detail of which was used by Ainsley China as a Christmas Plate design.

Bernard
I also have a ltd.ed of a Spitfire the artist being JW Mitchell. Titled The High Fighter signed by artist and the pilot, Pilot Officer Prince Emanuel Galitzine RAF Special Services. It was the highest and longest combat every flown over Britain Sept.12th.1942. My primary interest is finding information about the artist, any other information would be very much appreciated. B.Thomas ex.RAF.

I recently visited Australia where my grandfather emigrated to many years ago. Looking through photos we found written on the reverse of one of them that my grandfather was the coison of Reginald Mitchell. Although we had heard this we didnt no if it was true, I am honoured by this and always will be.

Malcolm Hooson
The government is quite correct in saying that it is not possible to grant Mitchell a posthumous honour of any kind. The shame of this situation lies with the officials around at the time who failed to do anything about it. Unfortunately he is not the only person to be overlooked;in the obituary columns you can frequently see men and women who have given magnificent service during the war without even a BEM between them, whilst Sir Humphrey gets his KBE just by waiting for his turn.

Jane
i have just found out today that my grandfatherwas the second cousin of R.J.Mitchell and I am very proud and my Grandfather was wing commanderF.A.mitchell. sorry lousey words been to Duxford today!!

I think RJ Mitchell should get a knighthood award because I think that his aircraft saved briton, without it we would all be speaking german.

S.Moore
I intend starting a campaign to Get Reginald Mitchell a posthumous Knighthood for his services to this Country. Many others have been awarded this honour for far less contribution to this country.

Jon
As a young lad from Stoke on Trent it makes me feel so proud that I also come from the same great city as Mr R J Mitchell. Just the other weekend the city was treated to a flyby by a Lancaster and 2 Spitfires in honour of Mr Mitchell. Jon Stoke - On - Trent

Hello, Please can anyone help me? I have acquired a large print entitled "First Flight of the Spitfire" by J.W. Mitchell who I am told is/was the nephew of the Spitfire's designer. The picture is lovely but despite a diligent search on the net I am unable to find anything about this talented artist or his work - surely this is not the sum total of his output?
