Can you love Robbie TOO much?

In her letter of protest, Katharina Murer admitted that Robbie and his music made her life better, but also worried that his fans overdo it. Such an overwhelming response from you has prompted her to write again...

'I would never ever have guessed what reaction it might cause to write my protest letter...

With my words against self-destruction in the name of fan-dome it seems I have found only the surface of what appears to me like a gigantic iceberg...

After all that happened following my letter I often felt overwhelmed. So many of the replies really touched me and I'm so grateful for all the people who sent me messages and emails and all the other things to show they care as well.

I will never forget when I was asked to send my letter to a young girl who considered committing suicide because of Robbie. I don't know if my letter can help someone in that situation, but if it can, nobody can guess how happy I am about it. And when reading some of the really sad replies, talking about depression, suicide or self-destruction, I couldn't stop thinking about where, in all this incredible mess, where are you, Rob?

Where are you Rob?

Personally, the answer I found to this question really surprising… I am convinced that Robbie Williams cannot cause a person's depression, suicide or self-destruction. All these can be caused by a lot of reasons - personal, physical, or medical, but music cannot cause that - Robbie Williams cannot cause that. I think obsession and excessive fan-dome is a way to compensate. It is a flight from reality to dreams.

As Robbie said himself, he writes the lyrics of a depressed alcoholic and these are people who feel touched by them. But if Robbie himself knows the pain of such diseases, why does he not care better for his fans? Rob, don't you care?

…More than anyone else, you do indeed care...

…More than anyone else, you do indeed care. You have let your fans look deep in such personal matters as fighting depression and alcoholism. We have seen you battle your diseases in films; we have read along in books, we have heard you talk about it a million times, remember?

“And the only reason why I talk about it is just that maybe someone who reads this will find himself and think: ‘That’s me, that’s what I have too and when he did it that way, then I can do that too.”

Thank you,

Kathi'

My Protest letter

'For many of us “Robbie Williams” has become much more than any other person in this universe. This is why today, I want to write a letter of protest against this simple fact.

I know that for many of Robbie’s enormous fan community this must be a quite insulting thing to do. But I believe it is not.

I see myself as a member of a worldwide Robbie Williams fan community, and these are the people I speak of.
These are the people I have met, I have seen, I have talked to, have become a part of. So what most of all I am protesting against is “us”!

Too much

Some fans do things like spending vast amounts of money for hotel rooms to catch Robbie at the lounge; skipping work or school to just catch a glimpse of Robbie at the airport; getting fired because of frequent daydreaming; getting depressed because he never answered a letter; staying up all night waiting for a call that never comes; watching TV rather than going out; dumping a boyfriend for Robbie; letting go of our community to spend a little more time with those who understand.
They also do things like working towards seeing Robbie instead of working towards one’s own advance in life, spending hours of investigation to find out his address, and months of savings for a flight to LA - giving everything for just this little bit of time, just one word, just a minute.

It is giving up reality for a daydream. It is what some of us are spending their lives with. It is reality for some of us. And, it is not just anyone.
It is the people we love to talk to everyday.

Love

All of us love Robbie. A lot of us have seen Robbie, at least from a distance.
Many of us follow his career as close as we can. Some of us have written a letter, or a poem, or lyrics just for him. A few of us ever got to talk to him. A small amount has spend a night with him.
But no one of us knows him.
A few of us haven’t tried yet. Some of us have been successful. Many have sworn they will never give up. A lot of us have at least dreamed about it. Still, it is what all of us want.

The heart of the matter is that some of us are losing control.
It is impossible to deny that in one or the other minute we are slipping away, to imagine, just for a second, what it would be like to be Mrs Robbie Williams. It would be so great! The man we love! The very one we want!

But why is it so much more easy to sink in dreams instead of making them come true? Why is it so simple to love Robbie and still so difficult to find love?
We ask ourselves: why can’t life be more like a Robbie dream? Why is any other man not good enough? Why does it need to be Robbie?

Why?

Because it is so much easier to get lost in a dream.
Because dreams don’t hurt. Because we already know Robbie.
Because his voice lets us fall asleep softly every night.
Because we have found just the perfect man.
Because we fell in love with his songs.
Because we sense he can’t hurt us.
Because we know he needs us.
Because we know he will love us.
Because we believe there is no other person in this world that can give us all the love we need.
Because we didn’t give anybody else the chance to open up just like Robbie does in his songs each day.
Because it is so much more easy to love Robbie as we determine who Robbie is. Because it doesn’t take effort. Because there is no risk to it.
Because we can only win.
Because in our perfect dream there is no failure. And no pain.

Being a Robbie fan for more than six years now, I started to let Robbie enter my life when I was about 14 years old.
At that time a incredibly sad and depressed Robbie Williams captured my heart with one of the most touching interview I have ever read.

For many years now, Robbie has become a constant part of my life, a figure, a symbol, a secret lover, a daydream, someone I devoted enormous amounts of time, money and passion to. Someone who stole himself into the center of my life, yet... without actually being there at all.
And this is what I speak up against today.

Decide

Every one of us can decide.

We can choose to love Robbie forever - or to go and find love our own. We can decide if we will listen to his songs and appreciate his work - or listen to the soul mate we have always searched for.
We can choose to watch his video a million times - or spend time with the people who love us.
We have a choice to surf through the net always hoping to find a sign of his presence - or let the world outside our door come back into our lives.

We can opt to save ourselves for Robbie or save ourselves for the real life.

Love

I believe we all love Robbie in one or the other way, and I am sure Robbie loves all and each of us just as much very likely not in the same way at all.

But today we should stop thinking about a love we will never experience - and start to learn love ourselves just a little bit more.

Kathi'

Have Your Say

What do you think of what Kathi's point of view?

Grace
Hi Kathi, thanx for sharing your insights with us!I am 37 years, married with children and saw a concert of RW on tv. From that moment on I was hooked on him! Before I was into totally different kind of music and never would have believed to actually love RW! I am very puzzled by my own behaviour, i am not the daydreaming type, but yet I started to spend many hours a day listening, watchting and reading RW. I never in my life idealized anyone famous or got obsessed but now I have been on the edge for RW, It is very scary.Thank god the worst is behind me now, but I got into a deep depression, and didn't care about anything anymore. i literally had to pull myself away from the edge and I am doing better now, only spend one hour a day listening to RW.My theory: RW has such heavy karma, he had to become famous in order to be able to share his karma with the rest of the world. I think we as his fans all share in his pain and hopefully we will share a bit of his happiness as well.

Sarah
Hi Kathi God your so right! i got to congratulate u well done i argree 100% with paula faithfull fans of Robbie(like me) dream of meeting Robbie and becomeing his friend and the accomplish dream to be with him but but thats never going happen and obsesive fans need to respect his scurity. i love Robbie Williams he's my idel and a great inspiration love you Robbie!

Paula
wooow you're so right...I've never read so a good rational point of view from a RW fan. It's true that all of us hope do meet robbie and to be mrs williams... but c'omon that is not gonna happen...But it's also true thay we live in a daydream about robbie, because we love his songs, because we think he's the greatest entertainment of all times, because he's handsome and so on and on... but we have got to live our reality, this is what we get...I think is normal that every faithful fans of robbie or any other performer believes than they will accomplish the dream to be with him, or at least be near him.

Love
We should remember fans' love supports him as well! Let's wish his happiness!

Strawberry
I forgot to write one more thing.. I feel he loves children. He wants to find a true love, so eventually he will find his great partner and raise a happy child. He and his family will be happy! As, people's life is wonderful, lots of happy things, so I hope he will notice his children gonna be happy! When he finds true love, he and his music will be enlarging more and more! His real happiness is our happiness as well!

Strawberry
Hi,Kathi' I agree with some of your writing. We should get some of the advices. But I think some Rob's fan have a balance of being his fan, and having their own personal lives..maybe?I love him, his performance, and his songs. But I have never felt depressed or being sad because I cannot be his friend in reality. I just feel sad when he is depressed and have some troble. That is all. I all the time can get lots of power of living due to his music and him. I see his superiour parts and I can have an aim to be like him. I think he has a big charisma, and his character is very attractive and cute.(although we don't know everything)I think it is good thing to fancy or love people, even if it is loving them as a star in fantasy. Because the feeling of loving somebody very much is like admiring them and think about them. We should acknowledge he has an extreme power of that.We also should understand he is a vulnerable and warm hearted human-being. But he gives lots of power and happiness for people. Our life is being fulfilled, as we have a hope to go to his concert, or meet him and listen his music. Some people succeed to talk or touch him. I think it is OK to have a dream, as it is not completely impossible. We have a power to make our dreams reality, unless we are not too much obsessed. His music is his music. So, people should not criticise it so much. It is sad, if he won't be able to write it, because of criticise.. Also, the truth is his music is popular, so people love and need it. (If his music is not good, nobody buys.) The fact is his artistic music moves people.I also felt many people really love him, that is why they are writing like this in many ways. It is very happy thing to care about him. He is loved as an artist, entertainer, star, one man and also human-being. He is something. We all learn many things from him, is that right? I think it is fantastic! Lots of love for him and his fans xxxxx

i do understand where she is coming from some robbie fans take it to the extreme but so do all other pop stars that have such a big fan base. At the end of the day each and every person that supports robbie and follows robbie is in titled to show that how every they feel fit. I love robbie to death have done since i was 13 which is 13 years ago i have meet him several times i still day dream on what it would be like but that does not make me deseprate. I am engaged to be married in two years with a 7 year old son and no matter what anyone told me to stop loving robbie they could go to hell. He is 100% pure.

Joanne
She's right! we can all dream that we will be the one to break down Robbie's barrier and the reason's he appears to never be lucky in love. The truth is Rob doesn't know who he is anymore and probably hasn't since the Take That days. This due to many factors including how young he was when he joined Take hat and the regimented way he was expected to behave. He was never allowed to grow up and develop his identity and this is why he faces the 'demons' he does today. Due to the extremity of his fame he will never be able to develop healthy relationships and therefor will never settle down with any lady. So we should all just enjoy his music and his lushness, then go to work and lead a normal life as i believe that Rob himself wishes for!

Kathi does have some good points but i am a 28 yr old happily married woman and i have always loved robbie's music i do have every album and dvd and i have seen him perform (very close i might add) which was amazing!!. i feel sorry for the young girls who dedicate so much of their lives, time and money in a daydream. i can see their madness to a certain extent and i am not without the odd daydream myself. but all in all i know what reality is and i just hope that rob finds the happiness he deserves as he is only human.

Simah
She`s right about music,he`s good. but people overdo it,no, the guy is good. i always admire him. actually i love Robbie. i wish i can get his e-mail address. i`m from SA.

Couldn't have out it better myself! Poor lad has got no chance whilst we all make him some one we want him to be. Imagine the carnage if he ever settled down or had kids. Must be hard being Robbie !!!

I'LOVE ROBBIE'IN MY OWN WAY.I AM MARRIED,38 YEARS OLD,AND HAPPY TO ENJOY HIS MUSIC,AND HIS ENTERTAINMENT.I HAVE NO ILLUSIONS JUST REALITY,AND IT'S GREAT!

Jane, Australia.
Hi Kathi, there's no doubt the love struck, freak factor would send Robbie running a mile and if left unchecked takes on a danger all its own, but what is it about Robbie Williams??? I saw Robbie in Melbourne for his first concert and HAD to see him again his second and last night. I loved every minute of it! I felt so disappointed that was the end... To me Robbie he has always been "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" (Kate Bush). I escape to have private times with him that I know are a fantasy but perhaps I connect with his vulnerability. He is a man of contradictions and extremes. His music stands a testiment to this. He has never been a pop, pump it out machine. He is under a lot of pressure to 'perform' so no wonder he turns to drugs for strength. I feel so sad that I will never meet him or connect with him physically. I imagine some of his easy lays would repulse him after. I have to settle for the spiritual connection I feel and realise this surpasses anything else anyway. We all love you Robbie. Just remember you don't need to prove anything to anybody.... Love you always, Jane.

princess
you are right all women should wake up don't day dream about Robbie Williams (although he is sexy!).

Abi
Wow....

paula
think your letter was great, now can you pass my address on to rob, so i can let all you lovely ladies know ive nabbed the sexiest man on the planet! ha, but serioulsy, no amount of money is going to bring him to me and so ive not spent any! i believe in fate, and things happen when they happen, so when i catch him in my local supermarket i know my time has come to corner him in the veg aisle! good letter kathi, merry xmas all, and rob, asda or sainsburys?? ;-)

Emily Collins, Hertfordshire
I have liked Robbie since his Take That days. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him, but hope one day I will. Maybe it's not meeting him that keeps my imagination flowing. The excitement of the unknown! I wonder what Rob's Mum thinks about it all??? To have given birth to a boy that would capture the hearts of so many people, it must be amazing and scarey all at once. We all live in hope that if we met Robbie, he would fall in love with us, but we've got to keep things in perspective. He is not Superman, he is just very very sexy! We all want him for ourselves, but we must accept the reality that its highly unlikely. Just hold onto the dreams of your imagination, because the ending is always better when you make it up yourself. x

emma
i agree with what you are saying compleatly, i am a hugh fan and have been for about 7yers , itruly belive that he help people feel beer about themselfs not worse, as much as meeting him was a big hing to me i know he'd never remember me but he was so great at the time it don't matter. i hope you can help people feel beter about them as what you said makes perfect sence, the fantacy is fun though. x

OH MY GOD WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF WRITING. NOW YOU WILL SEE HOW OLD I AM, OLD ENOUGH TO COME TO MY SENSES AND LIVE IN REALITY. I AM MARRIED AND HAVE ONE DAUGHTER, SECOND MARRIAGE HOWEVER. I HAVE BEEN A ROBBIE FAN FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS AND I PROBABLY THINK ALONG THE LINES OF KATHI, BUT I WOULDNT GO TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH FOR HIM. THE FANTASY IN MY HEAD IS A LOT BETTER THAN THE REALITY AND I DONT FEEL THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THAT. I SAW ROBBIE THIS WEEK IN MY HOME TOWN OF ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA AND HE WAS HIS USUALLY BRILLIANT SELF. I HAD INTENTIONS OF GOING TO THE HOTEL AND THEN FLYING TO MELBOURNE TO HANG OUT BY HIS HOTEL JUST TO CATCH A GLIMPSE AND HOPEFULLY SAY HI, BUT AFTER READING YOUR LETTER I THOUGHT WHAT THE BLOODY HELL AM I THINKING. I DONT EVEN KNOW HIM AND I AM ACTING LIKE SOME LOONEY GROUPIE. HE IS DROP DEAD GORGEOUS AND SEXY, HIS MUSIC IS AMAZING, HE IS A CHEEKY BAD BOY WHO DOES WHAT HE WANTS, HE IS DOWN TO EARTH AND ALL THESE TRAITS CAUSE ALL US WOMEN TO WANT HIM FOR THEMSELVES, BUT IF WE WERE HONEST HE IS A BIT MENTAL SOMETIMES AND HE WOULD BE EXTREMELY HARD TO LIVE WITH - HAVE YOU READ HIS BOOK - TOTAL DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE OF HIM, MAYBE THIS IS THE REAL HIM. I THINK HE WOULD BE A GREAT FRIEND THOUGH, I MEAN LOOK AT THIS RECORD JONATHON HAS STUCK BY HIM SINCE THEY WERE BABIES. I AM WAAAAAY TOO OLD FOR HIM BUT THAT DOESNT STOP ME WANTING TO SEE OR SPEAK TO HIM, BUT ME ALONG WITH MILLIONS OF OTHERS. WHERE DOES HE STOP HE IS ONLY ONE MAN AND HE CANT MEET AND GREET EVERYONE WHO WANTS HIM. I FEEL FOR HIM HIS LIFE MUST BE SHIT WHEN HE TOURS. HE WOULD ONLY SEE HOTEL ROOMS. WHEN HE DOES COME OUT HE IS MOBBED. HE CANT DO ANYTHING WITHOUT IT WRITTEN IN THE TABLOIDS. I WOULDNT WANT HIS LIFE FOR QUIDS. ALL I CAN WISH FOR IS HE CAN FIND THAT ONE SPECIAL WOMAN AND HAVE HIS OWN KIDS - HE WOULD BE AN UNBELIEVABLE DAD. I REALLY DONT THINK HE WILL SETTLE DOWN THOUGH I THINK HE WILL EVENTUALLY BECOME A RECLUSE AND LIVE ALONE - I HOPE I AM WRONG - LOVE YOU ROB - GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR FUTURE - PLEASE TOUR AGAIN ONE DAY - YOU ARE A LIVING LEGEND AND YOU HAVE MADE YOUR PLACE IN HISTORY FOR EVER XXXX

debra sugden
my name is debra sugden and ive been afan of robbies for about 6 years what he sings in alot of his songs we have all gonethrough and yes depending on my mood his songs can either send you into a state of manic happiness or in a state of serious suicidal depression we cant entierly blame the words of his songs for how we feel when we here his music if youu suffer from medically diaganosed depresson then you cant say oh robbies song made me sad but if you listen to it while youre really down it can make you feel bad i know i used to sit in my room when in times of a depressed state and play those songs inparticular angels and feel and i could cry for hours playing those two songs over and over again at the end of the day we all have good times and bad and robbie is just like us he feels emotions the way we do except he expresses it to the whole world its like a realease for him through his music he is one of the most sad and mesmerising musician of all time and their will never be any one like him even my partner can relate to the song come undone he had problems with drugs and alchol and the line i pray when im coming down youll be asleep was exactly what he was going through with his mum and her not wanting him to destroy his life i love robbie am i obssesd yes do i sit in awe when i see his music videos do his songs make me cry and smile yes but remember one thing hes real and so open and thats why we all want to be like him and all want a partner like him hes one in million

sofia
i totally agree with Kathy.I believe that we should put some borders and define what is reality or not

sr
I have read a lot of love in all the comments. Love - as it is to me - is one of the strongest feelings you can have towards somebody. So how can you claim to love RW without really knowing him? Love - for me - has something to do with trust, cheering the other person up when he is down, help the other person realise his dreams and be there to laugh, to cry and support. None of this is possible without even knowing the person. You all may adore Robbie the singer, but this has nothing to do with loving Rob, the person.

M
Totally true! It is fine to be a fan of Robbie, but please be still down-to-earth.

yana
I love Robbie!:) Like everybody! Can you tell me is Robbie coming in Bulgaria

mil
THIS IS MADNESS! HE IS JUST A LAD FROM MANCHESTER WHOSE JOB HAPPENS TO BRING HIM INTO THE PUBLIC EYE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS HERO WORSHIPPING MENTALITY-WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS, AFTER ALL. GIVE HIM A BREAK, WHAT DO YOU THINK THIS KIND OF ATTENTION HAS DONE TO HIS POOR MIND.

louise robertson from edinburgh age 13
robbie i love you ur the best singer ever when are u comin to edinburgh next cause i want to see u live in concert plz robbie come to edinburgh cause i luv u and i fancey u!!!!!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

What a good piece to read, it captivated me for sometime and how true your words are to those who feel the same. You see, in the past, I always thought it was me that had this weird feeling about him (call me mad...I know!) I used to think that the only reason he had never met his love is due to the fact that he had never met me, and sometimes if ever he just popped into my head for a second I always thought he was thinking of me - even though he didn't know me(somehow!!)

lucinda
I agree..i do not know what real love is, but of what i know of it i do love Rob! I endured the same circumstances as Kathi. When i was 12 i was very fond of Rob, and as i grew older i began to find him very attractive. Hes someone who seems so strong yet, inside he isnt. This appealed to me so much. I love and share his passion and flare for music and his enthusiasm on life. He keeps me going. And now, as i am taking exams, and enduring lots of stress! Rob is a strong figure i can look up to and admire. The fact that Rob pulled himself through drugs, drink, weight problems and successfully pulled himself out the otherside allows one to relate to him. I seem to feed off his strength. Hes only a human, but a special one.

Jaybird
Kathi, I sometimes feel in love with Robbie. There was something about him and his lyrics that touched my soul. I wrote a few letters, poems and lyrics - but nothing has ever been sent to him. Robbie's life (or what we are shown of it by the media anyway) and mine are like a game of snap... but ultimately I draw my strength from myself and my higher power... Robbie and his eyes are just a sideways glance at what I can achieve... He is an inspiration to better myself... but thank G.O.D. I'm not obsessed - that could do a fragile person some real damage... Jaybird

Ditto Kathi & thanks to the BBC for closing this forum. Entertainers are only doing a job like everyone else (although they get more $$$) and should be praised for being great at what they have chosen as a career not treated like gods. Respect their TALENT and spend your energy loving your family, friends and the world as a whole.

Ms Turner
I think it is just that, HER point of view. To truly love someone you have to know the person, inside to out, being a fan, you only know what the media allows you to know, you don't get the chance to meet the person behind the persona, the hurts, the fears, the joys, the laughter and yes, the tears and frustrations. But you also do not get to share in the simple every day joys in his life. To love him is acceptable, realize this though, you are loving an idea, an image created by the media, not the real person. He is only human, he is not perfect, thank God, what a horrible image to have to try to live up to. But he is near perfect in my eyes, as well as many fan's eyes. It's okay to love the music, the ideal, even the idea, but know, that the love is not deep, true love if it is just of the image, the persona, the 'who' you think, not the 'who' you know. He is attractive in many ways, the little boy who just wants to be loved unconditionally, the grown man who wants the same thing. He has doubts and questions and wonders probably the same things every day normal people wonder. He just has a harder time with it, not being able to go to the store without being mobbed, being able to go to the park to play soccer, just walking down the street. Remember this in your love of him, and whomever else *famous* that you love., they are human, they have the same wants and desires as the rest of us 'normal Joes', respect them and their privacy, allow them their 'own' time, and think about what you do before you do it, like, if you do see him, think about how you would feel being famous and mobbed all the time. Sometimes, tbey just want a break, a chance to just blend in. Un-noticed. Love them for their talents and unique individuality. He is a precious and percocious talent that will go far, and love deeply when he finds 'The One',. Love you mr p.

maria do mar
i agree 100% with kathis point of view......thats so, so true.....i had a moment in my life i was needing so much this feeling ive for rob......and i must say he will always have a special space in my heart......but reality showed to me some good things as real friends we have and who love and need us......but also showed not so good things.....it showed my dreams about meeting rob one day or being his friend will never come true......so life must go on, but always loving more and more his music and lyrics and performances, but trying to always remember rob is a star and we cant touch the stars.......

Storm
By conincedense I stumbled onto this post dear Kathi, it's so sincere written..! But why stand up against something you adore, admire or love so much..? (what I actually want ti say is: indeed snap out of it, love yourself more ;) Und dan fur Lisa, hmm, ja, peinlich kann mann auch sagen.. Ist es aber nicht ;) Sincerely, Storm.

Darc
i agree with you, Katharina... he is only human and none of us should think of him as anything more. to daydream about him all day long is to worship him and worship is somthing that is reserved for gods and deities, not man. i believe that you do us all a justise in reminding us to not focus our lives on trying to see a man/woman... no matter who he/she is. .:Darc:.

Grainne (GC)
Hi Kathi I agree with you. Robbie was the one person who would never let me down - when the chips were down - robbie was always there and I know that I would be very lucky to meet him but the chances where next to none. I didn't spend huge amounts on money - except on buying singles and albums but as a fan thats a normal thing to do. Now I have a man who accepts that I like robbie as does he, but he loves me and I love him and thats real. I totally agree with all your views and believe that we should all love ourselves - you have to love yourself to be able to love someone else. Grainne

sara
he probably reads this web site and think you are all crackers, yep he is fit but get on with your lives.

Oda
This is very well written, and i asure you, loads of this is true. But i dont agree with you when you said, we have all a choise. Because some of us don't. It's to late! Take me for example, I was 12 when i first fell inlove with him, and his music. i am 18 now, and i am addicted. I didn't relize that he would take over my life, before it was to late. My Robsession have made me different, and i have had different sorts of troubles because of it. I've had huge problems with my self and such. So my point is, i didn't see what happened before it was to late. I only lived in my dream-world, and fantasize about him... and i am still at that point. i dont have a life. The only friends i have now, is the ones which also is Robsessed. We all suffer from it. And we cant do anything about it now. And to you all which coments this... This Robsession is not a joke, please dont make laughs about this. It can make some people "sick". Thanx

Maria
I think it is ok to be a fan of Robbie Williams. I think it is ok to love his music and him. But I even think that every Robbie Fan has to do his or her own experience with that. I know that ther are many girls who fall in love with him. I know that a lot of them lose their reality. But I think that it stops when they check it anytime. They fall in love with somebody else and find a new life in the reality. I have been so ignorant too. But know I know that it is stupid to love a person you´ll never meet in your whole live. I don´t say that I dont love him anymore, but I know that its different from loving my boyfriend, my friends, family... I think this spirit is very exciting and I am really looking forward to next summer when Robbie is in Berlin. Mary

Rose
Hm-m-m ... you find this situaion unique to Robbie Williams? Exagerated obsessions with the famous ... These people work their butts off to to become internationally known, and you're basically saying that the fans are to blame for getting sucked in? To each his own, I do realize there are people out there who can take it too far, but for most of us, having infatuations with celebs [fantasizing about a world most of us will never experience let alone understand] is just part of life.

ariuka
yes she is right we have got one chance to live in this world and just before u die what will u think?'oh no i just have got nice dreams not real live. 'and say 'hey god i didn't live!i just just ..dreamed..something'don't care and think about him too much; just think about yourself and your live 'touch real things' enjoy your live however it's good or bad ok!

bolera
Thank you, for your great letter, Kathi.
Of course there are some "fans" without any respect of his personality, his private life, trying to meet him everywhere they can do. In my opinion such "fans" are not real fans - far from it! I don't want to tread on somebody's toes, but they are only self-obsessed persons trying to compensate an unfulfilled life (love) and have lost the right view to reality.
In my humble opinion we can't image or guess what kind of feelings Rob has concerning his fans, probably these feelings will change very often and are depending on the special situation.
As well as, we should differ between "love" and "amorousness": It's easy to purport to love somebody and to live captured in this hopeless dream. In truth the most of Robs fans like his music, his performance or his eyes or smile ... or all together, but they're not fallen in love with him. It would be very facile to assert loving Rob without knowing him in daily life.
We all like to hear his music, listen to his voice, like to see him on stage charming the audience. We all adore his ability to interact with the public - a seldom gift in comparison with other singers and entertainer! All these skills make him so special and are the reason why we are his fans - thankfully for all he has done for us with his songs and lyrics, fans with our own life, with family and children, with job and hobbies, like I'm.
Nevertheless I'm looking forward to see Rob live on stage in the summer of this year in my hometown Vienna with his incomparable & impressive performance - in my family's company! I'll enjoy it!

Tanja
Great letter!!But I also think that everybody needs something to dream about..But its wrong to live just for Robbie.I'm a fan of him since 13 years now but i always tried not to overdo.I listen to his music an visit his concerts. And sometimes i start dreaming-but thats it!

With all the love and affection we grant to Mr.Williams, we should never forget that he's human like each and every one of us .. He's got desires, wishes & feelings like every human being does .. so don't suffocate him with emotions he hasn't asked for .. and - to the British & International press - who ever you claim he's with, you simply overdo. Of course, it's a journalist's job to find some story, but sometimes the journalists are worse than freaky fans. Kathi has written in many forums, I've seen her letter before. Basically she's absolutely right. It all depends on your point of view. The older you get, the smarter you get and you'll sure appreciate a life not ruled by a dream ! Nevertheless you can still be a fan. I'm almost 42, I live with a guy in a relationship that has now been going on for more than 6 years. Does it matter ? I'm still a fan. I love Rob's music & his performance, since I respect him as an artist & I'm looking forward to see him live on stage in the summer this year !

Sarah
Well written !

Sabine
Thats a great letter and I hope that your letter is a help for all the girls around the world!Sorry for my bad english but I'm still learning these language!

kaz
great letter, you are right, but you seam to me that you had it bad, and have regrets that you spent to much time on a dream . After all we dont know Rob, and also he does not know us,and just think what he is missing not knowing me!!

ELMO
damn straight!!

Nadja
I just can say that your letter is absolutely great.

It's me
Kathi, youe can't "decide" to have a feeling. Either you have it or you don't. But I agree that however overwhelming this feeling might be, we should always have an open mind for other options.

I understand the sentiments of this letter, but Robbie has his own idols - he prays to Elvis before a concert, kisses a photo of his musical and boxing heros - why are we any different? It is not our fault Robbie is so brilliant!! Everyone needs some fantasy in their lives, it is a good thing, not a bad thing.

Liz
I think she's completly right but I think also, it is difficult to stop dreaming about it because everyone neds and has dreams and once you started it is hard to stop...similar to a drug :-)

SNA
You said Kathi. If I had a daughter, I will not let her idolize RW to death. We can support his music career by buying his cds, listening to his songs, supporting his websites, his online stuffs ect but we do not have to waste our time doing what you have said in your letter. We can admire a person but in moderation. I always think that if we took away his music, Robbie is just like one of us. Would the fans go overboard for him then?

L.
nice, really nice. and now I can decide.. and I choose Rob. enjoy Your life's in Your own way.:)

Can i ask what the actual protest is? It was a very interesting read. I love robbie to bits and think he's wonderful (that does not mean i think he is perfect though) but i also realise the chances of meeting him let alone being with him is very slim, but there's nothing wrong with day dreams! However people choose to love him (whether loving his music or being obsessed), well thats up to the individual, each to their own! Being a fan is about appreciating what their idol does. Kat

Marlijn
Heey Kathi, I think this is a good letter and it true what u write on.

Chie

chick

Sunshine!

Ellie
I enjoyed reading that, thank you. This is something I'm quite interested in. I am also a big fan of Robbie Williams and I feel that what you've said also goes for anyone who is a fan of any celebrity. It's easy to get lost in an obsession like this espeically if your life isn't going quite right for whatever reason and/or if you maybe don't have much else to love. I just think if something starts to take over your life that much it means you need to think about your own life and problems more so that you can feel better instead of drowning in something else instead. Just use your common sense and don't lose sight of reality. I think that admiring a famous person for who they are and what they do can be a wonderful thing as long as you don't let it get out of control and take over your life. Loving RW and his music has made me really happy and had loads of benefits I think. He really inspires me. I think there are too many good things in life to feel you have to just focus on one constantly though. I found the articles below interesting. They answered a lot of questions for me. http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/08/14/1060588497208.html http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-20041013-000003.html

the only thing i can say is, that you've got a lot of courage to write about such personal feelings. i really hope that it's going to 'help' some people

Estrella
Hi Kathi. Like I said on the Dutch Forum. I think you're right. I love Rob as well, but I don't think it's good to get too obsessed with him, because it even scares him. To be honest. If I see screaming and jelling fans in some video footage or so, it even scares me to death. I can't understand why people have to scream and yell but that's maybe the difference of nature. But about this letter again, I think it's good you've done this, it may be a lesson for many fans. Love Ester (Holland)

natalie
great letter. absolutely argree with you. everything you said is true!

markia
