Family History Researches - in Staffordshire

The BBC's recent project about tracing family histories can help people in Staffordshire to find out who they are. Plus on this page - local family history links, and a notice-board on which to leave your queries...

Family History is now one of the most popular phrases put into search engines on the internet partly due to the huge popularity of the BBC2 series ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’

But - how much do you know about your past? Have you always had the feeling you might be related to someone important? Are you ready for the skeletons that might be hiding in your closet? And do you need help?

Help to research your family tree:

  • Information and Links

The National Archives - for families from the old British Empire
If your family lived in the UK in 1901, then the census is your easy starting point to finding out more about your ancestors. But what do you do if your ancestors came from elsewhere?
The National Archives, Kew, holds family history records for people of a variety of ethnic backgrounds. For example, people from an Indian background who are trying to research their family tree are likely to find interesting material in the papers on indentured labour held by The National Archives from the 1800s when a number of Indian indentured labourers were sent to colonies like Mauritius. These details could then take you right back to the town or village that your family left over a hundred years ago.
The free museum and research rooms are open to the public 6 days a week. Over nine million records are available to view at Kew and some, including wills, First World War Army medal cards and Second World War Seamen’s medal records, are also available online at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline
Visit www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Another excellent resource for researching ancestors who migrated to the United Kingdom is the "Moving Here" website at www.movinghere.org.uk.
This documents 200 years of migration history mainly from Caribbean, Irish, Jewish and South Asian backgrounds. The site allows visitors to search for documents on migration such as ships’ passenger lists, and an interactive section allows people to exchange their own experiences of migration.
And (of course!) have a look at bbc.co.uk/history/familyhistory.

  • Local website links

And, why not try some of the local groups that will put you on the right track?

Border History Group - a collective of local societies.
Not a formal body, but an informal group of enthusiasts, in the main to represent the local and family history groups of the area eg - Alsager Group of FHSC, Audley and District FHS, Biddulph and District Genealogy and Historical Society, Congleton History Society, Leek Historical Society, Norths Staffs BMSGH, Lawton History Group etc.
Their aim is to encourage the growth and development of interest in local and family history in North Staffordshire and South Cheshire by working together wherever we can.
Successful one day fairs have been held since 2000.
Website: www.borderhistory.org.uk

The Blo(o)r(e) Society
This is a Family History research group, based in Staffordshire, for people who have Bloors, Blores or Bloores in their family tree.
The Society was founded in 1996 and has helped nearly 260 members who were having difficulty tracing their ancestors. During his time we have assembled a substantial collection of resources and developed a unique knowledge of branches of the Blo(o)r(e) families world-wide. It has lots of Family History resources available, such as the censuses that help uncover who, where and what our ancestors were doing up to 150 years ago.
E-mail on enquiries@bloor.org, or visit the Society's web-site at www.bloor.org.

Burton and District Family History Society
The North Staffs Family History (01270 875203 / northstaffsbranch@bmsgh.org)
Both these groups are branches of the Birmingham and Midlands Society for Genealogy and Heraldry. For all contacts, see - http://www.bmsgh.org/

Burntwood Family History Group
The South Staffs family history society also has meetings in Lichfield - see
http://www.geocities.com/bfhg1986/

Staffordshire Record Office, Eastgate Street, Stafford - 01785 278380 - has a wide range of records such as census returns, parish registers, will and inventories, estate records, the records of the poor and religious nonconformity

Remember the Family History Day?

BBC Radio Stoke held a family history day in February at Trentham Gardens. BBC Radio Derby held a similar event in Burton.
The idea was that anyone wanting help with tracing their family tree - whether they'd just got started or were stuck part way through, could talk to people in the know.

Over 5000 people turned up on the day with stories of their own family history and questions and queries for our genealogists. To see some of the pictures click on the link below:

Professional genealogist, Richard Roberts spoke to BBC Radio Stoke's Stuart George, and helped some listeners out with their family trees.

Enquiries

We no longer take family history enquiries. However, there are tips on researching, and a messageboard, on
http://www.bbc.co.uk/familyhistory/ - please use them...

Has anyone out there heard of a place called Macalonie. I believe it was a group of small cottages and was situated in the area of Cobridge between the canal and Cobridge Road. I have been given a cutting from a paper.unfortunately I do"nt know which one or the date. In the cutting it says that "The route to Macalonie was the footpath to Wolstanton, which started by Halls shop in Cobridge Road. It skirted the allotments and crossed the canal by a footbridge, the site of which is sstill marked where the canal can be drained for drailage" Someone recalls the area known as Macalonie was regarded as being a part of the Grange Estate. Does anyone know or have information on a School called Dean School in Baswich or Colton area (maybe) of Staffordshire. Elizabeth Dean (nee Colley) rang the school for 60 years? She was born 1791 and died 1786 I believe.

Justine Spencer (nee Leese)
Hi, looking for any descendants of William & Susannah Leese who lived at Shaw Wood Farm, Sandon. The farm was auctioned off in 1882. They had 11 children one of which was my Greatx3 Grandfather Joseph Leese c1841. I have a photo of the farm taken in 1800s but can't identify Leese's? in it. Thanks.
