"Intensive Care" - a review

Intensive Care is the first album from Robbie Williams without songwriting sidekick Guy Chambers. Is there life after Angels? Stuart George takes a listen...

When you've read this review, add your comments too, on the message-board halfway down this page.
*******

What happens if you swap former World Party muso Guy Chambers with founder member of Duran Duran and the Lilac Time, Stephen (formerly "Tintin") Duffy?

Clearly it depends on the context, but in relation to Robbie Williams you end up with the son of Stoke's latest effort "Intensive Care".

It really doesn't miss Guy Chambers' input that much at all. Maybe that shows that Robbie is a decent songsmith in his own right.

There are still the soaring highs and occasional lows of Robbie's more recent releases, and after a couple of listens there isn't quite the finesse of Escapology, but it's all the better for that.

Gorillaz meets Flash Gordon

The first thing you notice when you get the CD out and have a good look at the packaging is how clever the artwork is. It's Gorillaz meets Flash Gordon really, and the inlay's nearly as long as the traffic jams on the A500... it just keeps growing.

The music itself sounds a bit rockier than any of Robbie's other five studio albums. It begins with the assertion "Here I stand victorious". Sounds reasonable to me.

You'll already know Tripping. As the lead single from the album it really doesn't fit in with the rest of it. It took three or four listens to get into this song, yet the rest of Intensive Care is more immediate.
Tripping stands out, but not as being better - just different.

Sin, Sin, Sin, is a great song for driving too... ideal for the A50 or M6. It's got an 80's synthy bass line and moves along with purpose - not a bad tune to it either.

Mini kitchen sink dramas

Spread Your Wings contains the line "home is where the hurt is" - surely not a reference to Stoke on Trent! In fact, many of the songs on the album tell stories. It's a series of mini kitchen sink dramas.

I just get the feeling that Robbie's building up to writing a rock opera. I can see it now running for literally weeks in the West End. Take This - the Robbie Williams Musical. There is a real sense of musical theatre about this.

Advertising Space, apparently about Elvis Presley but thankfully sounding nothing like him, is great. A mellow, laid back effort which, if it was a mushy love song, might get played at more funerals than Angels does. Dare I say I think it's better than Angels?

Oatcakes without bacon

I was a bit concerned that Robbie without Guy would be like oatcakes without bacon. You know, a bit bland, lacking flavour, something crucial missing.

Having listened to Intensive Care I needn't have worried. While missing a bit of the class of Sing When You're Winning and Escapology, the new album contains songs every bit as good, some really interesting lyrical ideas, and the occasional cracking melody.

The Williams/Duffy partnership is one which works. Oh, and if you fancy a bit of 1980's nostalgia I can recommend Steven Duffy's album "The Ups and Downs".

Well done Rob.

Intensive Care is out now on Chrysalis Records.

only now i really listened to it before i just heard it. The sound is good and the melody sensible. The words in "If you should die" really touched me. Was he thinking of a loved one? Advertising Space is one of my favorites, but then again the video is about a man lonely and maybe sad. It makes you want hold him. Overall in my oppinion a very good album.

Karen B. (from Austria)
I love Robbie, no matter what he does. He could sing the worst songs, and I would sill be loving him. My favourite song is Supreme, and Please don't die is also one of his best songs. :-)

claire king
Robbie's album intensive care really rocks. just like everything else he has ever recorded. I think he has a fantastic imagination. I have written a couple of songs for him. But i know he will never get to see them. Anyway Robbie keep up the rocking tunes and stay happy!! Love claire king from bromsgrove worcestershire!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I'm 52, and listen to Robbie with great pleasure. Once again he did it, first class. He is still, what I call, a great entertainer, getting better & better

Nina
I love Intensive Care, it is such a good CD. many of my friends don't like the CD, but I LOVE it =) And the song "make me pure" is the most wonderful song ever. I can't wait to I'm going to Rob's concert :D

denise sweeney
love intensive care, i am so glad that stephen duffy has taken the place of guy chambers, i think the album is all the better for it! Robbie has been allowed to bring his music to life, in his way and its shown in all of his songs my favourite is Make Me Pure, its truthful, unique and a brilliant song, the best album in my collection. Well done Robbie!

babu
I´ve never listened to Robbie´s CDs but then i got intensive care for Christmas and since that i can´t stop. I thought that he is just rock star, but this cd has suprised me. And ,also, i like that photos (mainly the second :) ) It looks like tarot cards. I love make me pure. I can understand the text. I feel it.

shazbo.....
This album really grows on you his lyrics really have a meaning . I think this is why rob will always do so well he touches a part in all of us. Roll on september cant wait to see those lyrics go with action,s

petewootton

stacey
intensive care is without doubt the best album so far.rob continues to draw me into his music. having been a fan since i was 12 (now 26) he still has something what makes you sit up and listen.to confifm my partner who sometimes feels second best to rob has even been singing along! and now wishes he was coming to the show in leeds. what more can i say. well done rob you truly are an amazing person and born entertainer with whoever you write with!

Alisha
I miss the old Robbie in Intensive Care.Sometimes its only his voice which reminds me that its a Robbie Williams album. Personally, i think its a shame he quit working with Guy Chambers. Some songs are pretty ok like 'Please Don't Die' and 'A Place to Crash' But Tripping is by bfar ,one of the worst songs i've ever heard. However robbie will always continue to be my all time favourite singer.

Gulla from Iceland.
Hæ,hæ Robbie! This album is great, outstanding. My personal favorite is "Make me pure".You are a great musician and a beautiful man. Congratulation. Hope I'll get a chance to see you in concert sometime. Have a great live Kisses

Heidi
Robbie's growing up! This album plays so well - exactly what you would expect from someone who is finally getting to to know his inner self (and like what he sees). Listen to his albums in release order and feel how he has grown as a songwriter, singer & entertainer. I love the songs (although Advertising Space grates after a while). Can't wait to hear them live for Aussie leg of tour in December!!!!!

lizz
i think its just a perfect album. something you gotta have in your collection. rob was very wise about songwriting with stephen, he writes poetry, hes wonderful with words. After listening to intensive care, i thought i should listen to the other half of the making of this cd, stephen duffy, so i did my research and bought ''keep going'' his lastest album. i fell in love, now im looking for the rest of the duffy and lilac cds. do we miss guy chambers? i dont think so...

tracey beattie
i love the new album especially number 6 please dont die. the one i love but always cry when i hear is nan's song. robbie at his best. why is it the song i like the best are never released as singles?

suzy
Stephen Duffy says Robbie/Guy were the most successful writing partnership since Lennon/McCartney. One comment I couldent disagree more with! Stephen should look in his own backyard for that accolade b/c he and Robbie are currently masters in their craft. I've had IC for a few months now and like fine wine it gets even better day after day. Thanks guys.

Emma(Biff)

Best album yet ! can't stop playing it....Go Robert !!!!!

Amna (Cairo)
First off, I'd like to say that the review, although I feel was meant to be short, has also lacked in detail. This album sounds to me, not as a die hard Robbie fan, but one that has accidentally followed his career since Take That, like it's almost what he has built up for ever since he got into this profession. It's incredibly honest, or at least sounds that way. Through several songs he more than touches on the subject that he culd be having an affair with a married woman, and so we are left with nothing than to believe that the man that repeatedly stresses that he can not love, has done just that. I think Robbie has finally moved on from the Pop “Diva” image he had created for himself to a true musician by combining the two pillars of most great talents, self-loathing and boyish arrogance. He is a poet, and with any grace from God, this would just be the beginning of his rehabilitation back into the real world.

Maria (Hertfordshire)
Well done Rob! Got the CD as soon as it was released. Can't stop listening. Love all songs equally. Yet again you have proven what a fantastic talent you are! Looking forward to seeing you at Wembley next year!! M xx

Great Album. Can hear his voice a log more. And he sounds British in this one!

lucid dreaming
For me music is the language of the Gods, and its messengers are ANGELS. Intensive Care adds another chapter to the planets' hymnal! I agree with Stuart that the artwork is amazing, clever? yes...it was CLEVER of him to incorporate his love of Grant's and Frank's work into his own creative vision. Earlier this summer I had my own vision of the Inspire card. (holy brightness batman!) By the way, if he's standing for election in the known universe it's as it should be, cause the greats are standing for him on the otherside! He won't need to sweat the elections judging by record and ticket sales. St. Stephen and the "One who Shines in Fame" make an outstanding writing duo (can't say I was familiar with SD before-but I'm rectifying that) This album does have the same magical, mesmerizing quality as the others-the more you listen the more you have to (FEEL,RADIO). It's safe to say that he does have the ability to "reel us in"...now...what to do with us once we're here? oops The album is uplifting and melancholy at the same time. He's displaying his emotional and vocal range from a new playing field. The album is another triumph in an amazingly successful career, let's hope this generation won't let our prophets go to waste! Advertising Space is such a worthy tribute to the King....and Random Acts of Kindness heralds the arrival of new king. And whether he wants to be King of Bloke and Bird?....well let's see what he says after the tour in 2006?

Deborah (Portsmouth, Virginia USA)
Rob's not releasing "Intensive Care" in the USA, so I got my copy from Canada after seeing him do "Tripping" on the MTV Europe Awards. What a fantastic CD!! There's not a bad cut on it. Rob's outdone himself!

side kick
this Album is fruity ,wholesome and fun ...and of course i love Robs humor and honesty and clever wit ..the music is not bad either ..but the lyrics are what shapes tis album and the great Robbie Williams good job !.

sarah C
i love this album very well thought about and such emotions i love love love intensive care !!

The only singer I listen to while driving every day (except on Friday) is Robbie Williams and I heard about him only four years ago. I like IC a lot because I can really hear his voice and what he can do with it. It is enjoyable to listen to songs when you can also hear the voice clearly (He sings his songs so effortlessly it's amazing.) and understand the lyrics. He CAN really produce good lyrics. Good lyrics with good tunes make the songs last a very long time. HOWEVER, I think, each one of all his solo albums has its own speciality and/or originality, none is really above or below the other.

Jenny Royle
Definitely the 'Icing on the Cake'.

Jenny Royle
An inspirational album, with songs that go straight to your heart. I think there's something for everyone on this album, and everyone will have their own takes on the songs. A little bit of all of us is in here!

Suzy
"A head Full of F---" really says it all about this album. Its the 1st RW album i have brought and was very impressed with the maturity lyrically and musically. I love the emotional rollercoaster it takes you on. Songs you laugh, cry and boogie to makes for one speacial kinda album and this one tops the cake at the moment. Sorry to see though that Rob finds success in wearing his heart on his sleeve as some things should be kept sacred. Hope RW's inner peace is found soon. P.S. RW is the new millenium king of Swing!

Kerrie Gould Stoke on Trent
Every album that Robbie has done has been outstanding. Intensive Care is fantastic there is not a single bad song on the album. Find A Place to Crash is brill and Advertisng Space is amazing. Well done Robbie!!

Suzy (Melbourne)
I wasent the biggest Robbie fan and really didnt take notice of his music until i heard Tripping on the radio and was intrigued enough to purchase Intensive Care. I love every song and congratulate Robbie & Stephen on their mature writing, lyrically and musically. My fave's are Spread Your Wings & A Place to Crash. P.S Claire Worrall has a angelic voice and compliments Robbie's fantastically. Hope Rob's journey will bring him to OZ b/c i'd love to listen to him live.

Nicola O'Neill
I think is new album is brilliant,my favourite song is Advertising Space and make me pure. Robbie is fantastic singer and songwriter and he's defo proved that with this album. The man's bril what can i say!

Christel (Malta)
Intensive Care is absolutely fantastic. I had read reviews, prior to buying the album, which said this is the best ablum yet from Rob but I couldn't see how anything could top some of his other work, especially Angels. But I was thrilled to discover it's all true! Advertising Space is beautiful. I think it'll be another Angels. Well done Rob and everyone, you are unstoppable and in my opinion unbeatable.

Lydia an old wood dragon from Holland
I have listend carefully to the cd intensive care. The only song i liked are:' trippin' and 'please dont die'. I am sorry Robster but you can do better than that. I am glad your soul is growing and i know you wil find true love shortly. your next cd will be spactacular or what ever. Greetings and lots of love and happines to al of you

Dennis-The Netherlands
I think IC is a great album, but I think it needs to grow on you. It is going to be just like "swing when you're winning" and even "escapology", at first very few people like it instantly, but after a while everybody loves it, buys it and it will have at least five hit singles! Well done, Rob!

Catherine.Graham (Middlesbrough)
We should all give credit to Robbie as well as Steven Duffy for the writing brillience. Rob doesnt get enough praise for his writing talent, Rob is a gifted writer, musician and in his words 'a born entertainer' thats what he is! Rob you have uplifted so many peoples lifes, your songs all seem to strike a resemblence with our lives. Most of all THANK YOU FOR BEEN YOU! Love Catherine x

Catherine Graham
Intensive Care is an AMAZING album, i have all of Robbie's album but this one is my favourite. It has soul, it touches you emotionally. There is a song for every mood Happy, Angry, Sad etc. ROBBIE IS A TRUE TALENT, HIS FANS WILL NEVER LEAVE HIM WE WILL SUPPORT HIM TO THE END, LOVE YA ROBSTER!

Antony - Stoke on Trent
The new album is great. Although we are familiar with most of the tracks following the BBC3 documenary, and the Berlin show, and the T4 shows, this has been good. Robbie's new partnership with Steven Duffy is excellent for him. His songs have moved on to a new more polished level, long may this continue. Its good that Steven has been taken into his touring band also. The tour next summer will worth going to, hopefully a lot more shows this time. I like Ghosts and Advertising Space, but the remaining songs show us how he really has progressed, and grown since stopping collaboration with Guy Chambers.

Esther from the Netherlands
I bought Intensive Care (IC) because I truely liked 'escapology' and 'swing when your winning', but I am disappointed about both the music and the lyrics of IC. I personally like 'classic' rock singalong songs (such as feel and angels and uptempo 'kids'), and IC is just to much early 80s electro-pop meets new wave to me. But if you are into the sound of Duran Duran maybe you will enjoy this album. Lyric-wise: I am not too happy with Robbies lyrics about the occult (see random act of kindness and the interview in the e-zine on his website). He has now been singing solo for 10 years about looking for love to fill the hole in his soul. I am sure black magic won't help. St Augustinus might be more useful. But that's up to Robbie himself offcourse. Anyway: this album is just not my cup of tea, except for the beautiful 'make me pure'.

Laura (Suffolk)
I think this is the first Robbie album that I have known all of the records before I've bought it - due to the television coverage. But that's not a negative. I'd love to see even more of Robbie (on telly and in person of course!) and my favs are Sin Sin Sin as I love feel good-upbeat records that you can sing to in the car at the top of your voice. There isn't one song I dislike and will probably have different favourites as time goes on. I'm a real fan of lots of lyrics that mean something, so well done Robbie. Can't wait to see you at Wembley Stadium and hope we get as close to the stage as we did at Knebworth (yeah - we'll be lucky!!)

Nadja from Austria
Sorry to say - the lyrics are great but the music doesn`t really touch me (except tripping - i really like that one ) Didn`t buy de album ! (Have got all the others though......) Seems i like Guy Chambers` influence! S O R R Y !!!!!

Aud
Must admit when Radio was released, my mates and I were a bit apprehensive about the 'new sound' but we had nothing to worry about. Intensive Care is a superb album - listening to it at work as I write this! Love Ghosts, Advertising Space, Tripping and Place to crash. Rob's voice sounds better than ever and I can't wait for the tour in 2006.

Grunt Futtock
Superb explosive Album!Thought Escapology was good and I was worried I wouldn't like the knew Album(dunno why?) but IC Is powerful,Heartfelt(Is that a word?)and lyrics are truely brilliant. IC gives me goose bumps and makes the hairs on the back of my neck do that weird thing,Y'know stand up on end..And makes me cry And no its not the tim of the month LOL Well done Rob! The Sky seems to be the limit mate,No1 just about everywhere... we're still lovin ya!! Here's to the next RWAlbum..Take Seven Seas and keep ya joints greased up Boysie Hope to see you performing on stage long into the future!!!!

kylie portsmouth england
all your cds are excelent I really like the song make me pure

No 1 Robbie Fan
Another fantastic album from the undisputed King of Pop. Can't stop playing it - Advertising Space is my favourite, but every track is great. He has proved that there is life after Guy Chambers, despite the prophets of doom. Robbie can do no wrong in my eyes, the complete entertainer - can't wait for the tour!

Betsie Boopsie
Im lovin it lovin it lovin it.,lovin it like that :-) ;-)

Pamela Clayton-Dines
Bought the cd 29th Nov. Have listened to it 6 times consequently, normally I 'get it',but who is Robbie singing about in 'Advertisement Space'? All the tracks are excellent, with the exception of 'Don't Let me Die' they all delayed my ritualistic housework on Sat. afternoon.' Spread Your Wings' gives me goose bumps on goose bumps. I absolutely love the lines 'I know I'm gonna die ...my revenge is living well'. Made me laugh! Also " Just relax, that's what Jesus would do"..... I can relate to " For those who live in fear of happy Christmas & New Year" for I am one of those.

Jane Carr-Hyde
I think this is a reaaly good album, Robbie's voice is maturing and mellow. It's an album about love, life and death. I wish so called journalists would stop criticising it, ie "A bit flat,or sounds like Lou Reed, or not his best... etc etc." Its songs of the times, plenty of feeling, passion and revenge, delivered with his usual heart- on- sleeve style. Well done Robbie, and Stephen and the gang too.

MammaMia
Advertising Space - great song and along the lines of what I would've written if I could write a song that is...A Place To Crash - is one of my favourites along with Tripping. Not too sure on Ghosts, will have to listen to it a bit more. Love all the other tracks. All in all an excellent album - congratulations!! MM xx

samantha
brilliant album.didnt like his music in the early days, but with age he has grown up into an entertaining, talented songwriter. lets hope it just gets better. no1 for weeks!!! love the tripping video by the way. just like my dreams!!

karin
Advertising space is as least as good as Angels!

anne
most albums you buy there is always a song you aren't keen on but this album of robs is brill every song is great a definate number one, working with stephen duffy has certainly done wonders

Sara in Vanvouver
I went from merely liking Robbie Williams to becoming completely Robsessed between the releases of Escapology and Intensive Care. A television airing of The Robbie Williams Show that I caught randomly while flipping channels two summers ago has to be credited with exponentially increasing my appreciation of him. He at that point exuded pure personality, and became more than just a beautiful voice and hunky looks for me. I remember I bought Escapology casually at around Christmastime 2002 because I was hypnotized by Feel on the radio. There was no major anticipation or excitement involved; I had yet to really discover the man through that broadcast of the Robbie Williams Show, which was still months away. This time however,I awaited Intensive Care, Robbie's latest effort, with maximal, bursting-at-the-seams anticipation! In a nutshell, the album was definitely worth all that excitement, and he did not disappo! int! I have been listening to it non-stop all week! The powerful opening track Ghosts, pounding and different, and with Robbie boasting about his powers over women makes for a wonderfully energetic, and characteristically cheeky kickoff to the album! I love how throughout Ghosts, he veers from bragging about his skills in the bedroom (I think...that's what I was told "come" means in British English!!) to crooning about true, sincere feelings for the girl in question. I adore that catchy bit near the end, where he muses "and on the radio, she was that summer song..." Tripping, this album's first single, becomes better and better the more I listen to it, or the more I watch the video, which has been getting welcome heavy rotation here! At first I found the song extremely odd with that high-pitched falsetto chorus contrasting with Robbie's usual voice in the verses. Now however, I find it very soothing, despite the adamant lyrics Robbie shouts out in the chorus. Tripping to me! is now strangely just as calming as anything by Dido or KT Tu! nstall! While you may disagree with my opinion of Tripping being a calming little tune, there is a good chance of you agreeing that Make Me Pure, the next track, is definitely soothing. The addition of the gospel choir makes it that much more breathtaking! As well, I love how Robbie twists the song by begging the lord to make him pure, but just not yet! I believe he is the only singer to make me laugh out loud! Spread your Wings was definitely the strangest track for me initially on this album. It sounded so incoherent at first. Again, as with Tripping, it continues to improve the more I listen to it! I had a similar experience with Falling in bed Again, an earlier song of his in which he also recites a fair bit...maybe I am not too open to speak-singing! The next track, Advertising space, is hands down one of my Robbie favourites...I loved it ever since I scored a bad-quality bootleg of him singing it live in Paris! I have always had a soft spot for ballads! Once again, there is an! other great twist in this song where Robbie cheekily expresses a crush on Lisa Marie Presley after spending several minutes criticising her late dad in the most poetic of ways. The next song, Please don't Die, is just so sophisticated, as well as moving. Robbie sounds so mature crooning it! I simply cannot believe that it is the same fellow that sang Rock DJ, and the ever-youthful Life Thru a Lens singing this! My compliments!! Your Gay Friend, the next song, or rather its title, memorably set press tongues wagging earlier this year. However, clever Robbie made it it a creative story of an affair with a married woman, rather than the coming-out song the press so wanted! Awww, that means there is still hope for us girls. Robbie, will you be the Tom Cruise to my Katie Holmes?? (Well, the age difference between me and him isn't quite that much, but he is quite a bit older!!) Anyway, before I trail on off-topic about my "proposal" to Rob, I'd like to really wax poetic about Sin! Sin Sin, the next track: Wow!! So lively...I was speechless u! pon firs t hearing it! As well, I initially thought that

Well done Rob this album is fantastic the lyrics really send shivers down my spine I think you are a great songwriter and you and Steven have worked together perfectly. I've only bought two albums this year, Bon Jovi's new one and yours and your comes out a clear winner for me. I love the melodies and lyric's and can see why it is called intensive care. you have spent a lot of time on this and I think it will be a great success. please keep more coming in the future. Take care Love

Bunny
I simply love this album, Robbie's vocals are top notch, the musical arrangements are too..every song has a haunting or singalong melody. Robbie said he is proud of it, and so he should be, he should also be proud of himself..I know I am!

jeanette griffin
I think it's ace - take no notice of the critics half of them don't know what day it is I like it and my grandson does and thats all that matters thank you for enother enjoyable album Robbie.

Patricia
Wow, spot on.

Grainne (GC)
I have been a huge fan of robbie's since I seen him live at Murrayfield, Edinburgh at the start of his last tour. I knew that I would like this album because what ever Robbie does it always delivers. Robbie said that this is his best album - although he always says that I agree - each album when it is written gives us an idea where robbie is - who he is. Robbie has said that he spent a lot of time listening to songs from the 80s and for myself who grew up in that era I can see the influence in a good way. Every song on the album is brillant - the tune, the lyrics but I do have two favourites 'Spread your Wings' and 'Sin, Sin, Sin' -two songs that I will be singing back to robbie when I next see him live. Thanks Robbie Grainne

Well done Rob this album is fantastic the lyrics really send shivers down my spine I think you are a great songwriter and you and Stephen have worked together perfectly. I've only bought two albums this year, Bon Jovi's new one and yours and your comes out a clear winner for me I love the melodies and lyric's and can see why it is called intensive care you have spent a lot of time on this and I think it will be a great success. please keep more coming in the future. I think that whoever you write with be it guy or stephen the results will always be brilliant because of your talents in songwritting, i love the way you use your lyric's, you have a gift and you use it well. Take care Love Jackiexxx

A cracking album. Sounds great and not a bad track on it - each one is a hit in it's own right. Advertising Space will be another stadium anthem for Rob - one we will still hear in many years to come and never get sick of listening to it and I agree - I do prefer it to Angels. Well done Rob, Steven & everyone involved.

I think Intensive Care is the best album by far that Robbie has created. There is not a single track that I do not like on there. I love them all and they are all great in their own way. Each one is individual and obviously means something to Robbie as they are so passionate. It really shows just how much he has matured and what a long way he has come. Robbie can pull off anything and this new album is no exception. I absolutely love it, its my No 1 fave and I think he will be around for many years as he is a fantastic talented musician and a joy to watch when he is performing.
