Stoke-on-Trent children going for a song

Helen Thomas
Children from Bishop Stamer Primary School in Stoke-on-Trent have written and recorded a song which celebrates the life, culture and famous people of the Potteries!

We've all dreamed of being a rock star - singing into the hairbrush or playing the tennis racquet guitar.

Of course only the lucky few actually make it, but children from a local school have already on their way!

Pupils from Bishop Stamer Primary School have written and recorded a CD. What's more it's all about the city Stoke-on-Trent.

Celebrations

The song celebrates many things that North Staffordshire is famous for...

Everything from pottery and spitfires to Robbie Williams and Phil Taylor all feature in the lyrics. (Scroll down the page to read the lyrics)

The children did research to come up with all the ideas and James Baker, their teacher, helped with the overall composition of the song.

Heavenly performance

They've even had their first taste of fame when they performed the song during the naming ceremony of "Stoke Minster" in May 2005.

The historic occasion at the church was led by the Bishop of Lichfield and was witnessed by hundreds of people.

The children are now hoping to record the song in a professional recording studio.

Who knows, it might really be the start of the popstar lifestyle, and Stoke-on-Trent really could be Top of the Pops once again!

Lyrics

Quarter of a million
In the Stoke City Choir
Oat Cakes, China plates
The bloke who built the Spitfire
Pot Banks, Gordon Banks,
Stanley Matthews, baggy pants.
You and me from A-Z, gonna go down in history!

It’s a sign to stick together,
Any kind of weather
A laugh to laugh together
Never say never
If the futures so bright, we gotta wear shades
Mr Williams gonna rock the DJ
We got tomorrow
And the rest of today
To keep it together

Quarter of a million
In the Stoke City Choir,
Oat Cakes, China plates and the bloke who built the Spitfire
Josiah and his Wedgwood,
My aunty with her cuppa tea Phil Taylor throws his darts…180!!
