Poems from the pitch

As part of BBC Radio Stoke's 'Joy of Books' season, we are looking for your sporting poems

"At Rotherham, I enjoy a pie, the balti's always worth a try..."
BBC Staffordshire Online's Matt Newsum highlights his love for pies!

We are looking for your poems that capture the passion and excitement of sport, to feature in a new web-series called 'Sporting Poems'.

Your poems could be anything from your memories of playing cricket on the beach with your mum and dad on your holidays, to experiences of representing your county at athletics.

Maybe you're a mad keen speedway fan and have written a few verses about the Potters or perhaps you're a disabled athlete who has faced barriers in competing in sport and have written about your experiences?

Whatever your story, we'd like to read your poems, and maybe they'll be featured on the website.

To submit your poems - send them to [email protected] - and mark your subject 'Sporting Poems'

And if you need a bit of inspiration, you can listen to, and read some poetry from BBC Staffordshire Online's very own Matt Newsum

Away Days - by Matt Newsum

Away fans

Train, coach or car
The football fan will travel far
To see their team in rain or snow
No journey ever too far to go

Brunton Park or Highbury
Glamour tie, or pre-season friendly
That knot in the stomach as the tension grows
At some grounds they chase you down the road!

At Rotherham, I enjoy a pie
The balti's always worth a try
Pompey don't even have a roof
At least they don't play long-ball hoof

Everywhere we go it's always the same
We never want to miss the game
Sat at home by the radio
It's never the same though

The place to be is in the stand
Stand up, sing proud and clap your hands
Support your team, feeling proud
There's nothing quite like a travelling crowd.

Matt has always been a keen poet, and has performed some of his pieces live in his local pub - The Sherwin Arms - before. I am glad to see that he is able to reach a wider audience with his verse. Well done Matt, all of us in Notts are very proud indeed.
