| Friday, 9 March, 2001, 10:26 GMT O'Sullivan aims for double gold Sonia O'Sullivan is through to the 3000 metres final Sonia O'Sullivan revealed after comfortably qualifying for the 3000m final at the World Indoor Championships that she is also going to compete in the 1500m event in Lisbon. The Irishwoman's schedule on Saturday will see her tackle the metric mile heat then run in the 3000m final just two hours and 10 minutes later. The tough feat has been achieved before - two years ago in Maebashi, Gabriela Szabo clinched both titles - but it is an arduous task. O'Sullivan won her 3000m heat on Friday morning. She was racing at the championships for the first time since winning silver medal over this distance in Paris four years ago. Breaking for home just before the bell, O'Sullivan gave herself a clear run for the line winning in 8:55.79, marginally ahead of defending champion Gabriela Szabo from Romania and the Russian Olga Yegorova. Britons Kathy Butler and Hayley Tullett also made the women's 3000m final as fastest losers.
Ireland's Mark Carroll made it through to the final of the men's 3000 metres. With the first five progressing automatically to the final, European Indoor Champion Carroll was quite content to cross the line in 7:53.64 in seventh place in the second heat as the first heat had been much slower. Britain's John Mayock also qualified from Carroll's heat in 7.51.10. Craig Mottram of Australia won the heat in 7:50.21. Hicham El Guerrouj, determined to atone this year after surprisingly losing the Olympic 1,500 metres medal to Kenya's Noah Ngeny, won the first heat while Olympic 5000m champion Million Wolde also qualified for the final. Irish 800m representative Daniel Caulfield produced a very assured performance to qualify for Saturday's semi-finals. The presence of talented Russian Yuriy Borzakovskiy and American Trinity Gray didn't unhinge the Irishman running in his first major championship. Caulfield clocked 1.47.83 to take third place which earned him the first fastest loser spot. Borzakovskiy won in 1.47.28 ahead of Gray (1.47.59). Shinkins disappointment Swiss medal prospect Andre Bucher endured a few nervous moments before learning that he had taken the final fastest loser's spot after only finishing third in the last heat. Irish 60 metre hurdler Peter Coghlan narrowly failed to qualify for the final of his event. Coghlan clocked 7.67 in the semi-finals which left him 10th fastest with the top eight making the final. The Irishman clocked 7.73 in the morning heats. Irish 400m hope Karen Shinkins bowed out of the championships in disappointing fashion. Shinkins finished fifth in her first round heat in a time of 53.90 which was the slowest of the entire field. |
