Dai Greene announced himself as a genuine world-class athlete in 2010 with some stunning performances in the 400m hurdles.

At the IAAF Continental Cup in Split, Greene came within 0.06 seconds of Kriss Akabusi's 18-year-old British record

The 24-year-old joined an elite group of Welsh athletes who have won both European and Commonwealth gold in the same season - equalling the feat of Iwan Thomas, Colin Jackson and Lynn Davies.

The competitive year began in earnest for Greene in July at the European Championships in Barcelona, where the Llanelli product and Welsh compatriot Rhys Williams secured a one-two finish for Britain in the men's 400m hurdles final.

The following month Greene had to settle for bronze in the London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace, behind the world number one, Bershawn Jackson, and Javier Culson of Puerto Rico.

But in September Greene stunned the world when he beat both these world stars at the IAAF Continental Cup in Split, Croatia, running under 48 seconds for the first time.

Swansea Harrier Greene clocked 47.88 to beat the stadium record and came within 0.06 seconds of Kriss Akabusi's 18-year-old British record.

Green capped a fantastic year at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi with victory in the men's 400m hurdles - claiming Wales' first gold in India while Williams took bronze.

The winning time of 48.52 seconds in the final saw Greene edge out defending champion Louis van Zyl of South Africa, who had to settle for silver.
