Gilbert Parkhouse, one of Glamorgan's most famous batsmen, has died aged 74.

Former Glamorgan bowler Don Shepherd paid tribute to his former colleague saying, "he was an elegant player and although he was slight of build, he was particularly strong in hitting the ball through the off-side."

"He had an uncanny timing, which only the better batsmen have.

"He could play the fastest fast bowlers uncannily," Shepherd added.

Parkhouse made his Glamorgan debut in 1948 and is still the only Glamorgan batsman to score a Championship century against every first-class county.

He achieved that feat with 121 against Leicestershire at St Helen's in May 1960.

England honours

He was selected for England in the 1950 Test series against West Indies and the winter tour to Australia and New Zealand that year.

Poor health ruined his chances to impress and he was not selected again until the third and fourth Tests against India in 1959.

He played for England seven times in all.

Parkhouse retired from county cricket in 1964, after an illustrious sporting career in which he also played rugby for Swansea and hockey for south Wales.
