Ex-Wales football captain Gary Speed leads the nation's winners in the Queen's birthday honours list. Long-serving Premier League midfielder Speed, 40, receives an MBE. He is joined by Australian-bred, Cardiff-based Great Britain track cycling performance manager Shane Sutton (OBE). Karen Jones' work with Welsh women's football, John Lister (athletics) and John Lloyd (cycling) and Nicola Tustain (disability sport) also earn MBEs. Speed, 40, who was born in Mancot, north Wales, played for Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers, becoming the first footballer to each 500 Premier League appearances. He also won 85 caps for Wales and is now a coach with Championship side Sheffield United. Sutton's work in Welsh cycling, particularly with 2008 Olympic gold medallist Nicole Cooke, has been widely acknowledged in Welsh sporting circles. Lister has been a long-serving and influential athletics figure in Wales, Jones is acknowledged for her work with women and girls while Tustain has made her mark in equestrian disciplines through disability sport.
