Williams loses top ranking spot
Mark Williams
Williams struggled in the World Championship
Mark Williams will begin next season as world number two after he was overtaken at the top of the rankings by Ronnie O'Sullivan.

O'Sullivan, beaten by Stephen Hendry in the Embassy World Snooker Championship semi-finals at Sheffield, has done enough to take over top spot despite not enjoying his best season.

Peter Ebdon's World Snooker Championship win has boosted him from number seven to number three.

Ebdon's first world title lifted him four places up the rankings and the 31-year-old is now targeting the number one spot.

Winning the World Championship will give me the appetite to work even harder on my game next season
Peter Ebdon
"While I've always believed I was capable of becoming world champion, it's another thing actually achieving it," said Ebdon.

"I'm not even thinking about next season at the moment - I want to take a few weeks' holiday before then - but I will be in with a shout of the number spot. It's a possibility now.

"There are still one or two things I need to work on with my coach Chris Henry.

"And winning the World Championship will give me the appetite and desire to work even harder on my game next season.

"I think I've grown stronger throughout the season.

"I've worked very hard on my safety and my shot selection. And, apart from the odd blip here and there, my temperament has been good."

Scotland's John Higgins drops to fourth and Ken Doherty is down to fifth, while Hendry, who lost 18-17 to Ebdon in the final, slipped one position to sixth.

Stephen Hendry

Stephen Lee and Matthew Stevens complete the top eight with Paul Hunter at number nine and Jimmy White moving up one place to 10th.

There are two new faces in the top 16 - European Open runner-up Joe Perry has climbed from 27th to 13th, displacing Dave Harold.

And Quinten Hann - up from 25 to 14 in place of Fergal O'Brien - becomes the first Australian to join snooker's elite since Eddie Charlton back in 1986.

John Parrott climbed four places to 18th, with six-time world champion Steve Davis dropping four places to 25th.

Essex's Ali Carter, up 30 places from 61, becomes the only new face inside the top 32, one spot ahead of Thailand's James Wattana.
