Dredge claims second in Italy
Bradley Dredge finished with a final round 69
Bradley Dredge hit top form in Sardinia
Welsh golfer Bradley Dredge claimed his best-ever finish as a professional as he took second place in the Italian Open in Sardinia on Sunday.

French rookie Gregory Havret claimed his first European Tour title and the first prize of 103,000, with the 24-year-old carding a final-round 69 for a 20-under-par total of 268 at Is Molas.

Newport-based Dredge also closed with a 69 but was left to rue a costly double-bogey six on the fifth after he hooked his tee shot and lost the ball in some bushes.

Hertfordshire's Ian Poulter put up a brilliant defence of his title, firing his second hole-in-one of the season on the 14th in a final-round 67 that give him a share of third place with Spain's Diego Borrego and English duo Mark Roe and Shaun Webster.

Roe's superb performance was enough to keep his card for next season, moving him up from 131st in the Order of the Merit at the start of the week into the top 115.

But Webster will have to go the qualifying school later in the month after narrowly failing to claim the second place outright he needed to keep his European Tour card.

Another player to lose his Tour card was Dredge's fellow Welshman David Park.

His hopes of avoiding the qualifying school faded on Saturday after a disappointing third round of 73, leaving him the tall order of having to finish in fifth place.

Final leading scores in the Italian Open golf tournament at the par-72 Is Molas Golf Club (GB unless stated):
