Roy Jones junior is willing to step down a weight
Joe Calzaghe has moved a step closer to his dream fight with Roy Jones junior after the American's agent, Brad Jacobs, confirmed that they were considering a match with the Welshman.

Undefeated WBO super middleweight champion Calzaghe, who destroyed number one challenger Mario Veit inside a round in Cardiff on Saturday, has long wanted to face Jones.

Calzaghe has also struggled to catch the interest of the American TV companies and a fight against Jones, regarded by many as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world at the moment, would certainly attract huge viewing figures.

"Roy and I have been talking about Joe for a while and more importantly we watched his fight this past weekend with Mario Veit," said Jacobs.

"He certainly looked terrific. Joe's a long-standing champion and he deserves all the accolades he's receiving.

"We're anxious to initiate talks about Roy potentially fighting Joe, maybe later in 2001."

Start talking

With Jones appearing willing to fight in the United Kingdom, the 73,000 capacity Millennium Stadium in Cardiff has been touted as a possible venue.

Jacobs said that Jones - who holds the IBF, WBC, WBA and IBO light heavyweight titles - would also be willing to drop down a weight to fight Calzaghe.

Such an arrangement would suit both fighters. Calzaghe could stay at the weight he is comfortable with, while Jones - a former IBF super middleweight champion - would not risk losing any of his light heavyweight belts.

"I fired off a fax to Frank Warren (Calzaghe's agent) earlier today asking him when he might be available to sit down and start talking about these matters," Jacobs added.

Jacobs admitted that, apart from WBO champion Dariusz Michalczewski, the light heavyweight division had run out of challenges.

The Jones camp would also consider a match with the fighter who emerges on top from the middleweight tussle between Bernard Hopkins, Felix Trinidad and William Joppy, although the bout would have to be at super middleweight.
