![]() | Thursday, 18 January, 2001, 16:59 GMT Nerve-wracking night for Scarlets ![]() Llanelli need a win - and tries - against Colomiers Llanelli go into Friday evening's Heineken Cup clash with Colomiers knowing they are just one of six sides - including their opponents - chasing two best runners'-up spots. A win for Llanelli would lift them to eight points, but the Scarlets also need to run in the tries for a better chance of qualifying. They have more tries than any other side on six points apart from Saracens, with Swansea and Stade Francais both likely to qualify from Pool 2. Coach Gareth Jenkins has kept faith with the side which lost so narrowly to Gloucester last Saturday. But there is a quarter-final incentive for Colomiers too. A win for the French side would guarantee participation in the lucrative knock-out stages. Emotional scars But in a competition with enough qualifying connotations to test the most adept of mathematicians, either side could still top the group if Roma beat Gloucester.
"The interest, the results mean so much and the connotations are unworkable. "We know we have to win on Friday night and we know we have to score tries, but we don't know what the other teams have to do," said an excited Llanelli coach Gareth Jenkins. His captain, Wales number eight Scott Quinnell was keen for the Scarlets to get over the pain of the last minute defeat by Gloucester last weekend. "The emotional scars are still there, but it does not matter where the inspiration comes from as long as it is there," Quinnell said. And there were words of advice from Wayne Proctor, skipper when the Scarlets were pipped by Northampton in last season's semi-finals. "If everyone goes in with a hard psychological edge coupled with the knowledge we need to score tries then hopefully it will be a good day," Proctor said.
