![]() | Saturday, 16 December, 2000, 16:45 GMT Pontypridd still in Euro hunt ![]() Sonny Parker: First-half try for Pontypridd Pontypridd 41-7 Caerphilly Pontypridd kept up their challenge to finish in the top four of the Welsh-Scottish league with a convincing win over Caerphilly. Ponty completed outplayed the visitors in the first period, producing brilliant running rugby that resulted in superb tries. They went ahead in the sixth minute with an angled 22-metre penalty from full-back Brett Davey after Caerphilly were penalised for killing the ball. With Ponty in complete charge they increased their lead in the 12th minute with a fine try from centre Sonny Parker, who capitalised on several handling moves in the 22 with Davey converting. Running with power and pace Pontypridd pinned Caerphilly on the defensive and in the 22nd minute Jonathon Bryant dummied on the halfway line to cross under the posts. Davey again added the two points with the boot. Lock Roberto Sidoli increased Ponty's hold with a try under the posts after a Ceri Sweeney break, Davey again on target with the conversion. Near the interval Sweeney added another try to give Ponty a 29-0 advantage. Caerphilly made several changes at half-time and had the better of the early action, but despite several close calls failed to tap a solid Ponty defence. Ponty returned on the offensive and during a spell in Caerphilly's 22 Parker and Gareth Wyatt were desperately tackled on the point of touchdown. The home side added further touchdowns from John Colderley and Will James, one converted by Davey with Luke Richards responding with a late converted consolation try for Caerphilly.
