Thomas took over the mantle of British number one from Olympic silver medallist Roger Black and established himself as one of the world's top one-lap runners in 1998. That year saw him take both the Commonwealth and European titles, as well as the World Cup final in Johannesburg, adding to the 4x400m silver medal won at the 1996 Olympics.
But a succession of injuries have stopped him from competing at the highest level in recent years.
Years spent on the track should pay off in the running events, while he will be hoping to showcase the bike skills that saw him twice compete at the BMX world championships.
But Thomas is not a big fan of water and expects to struggle in the swimming and canoeing events.
