Sports Personality preview show looks back at Idowu's 2009 Sports Personality of the Year

Phillips Idowu became Britain's second gold medallist at the 2009 World Athletics Championships thanks to a brilliant performance in the triple jump. The Belgrave Harrier from Hackney leapt to a personal best 17.73m in Berlin's Olympic Stadium to beat the field.  | 606: DEBATE |
The victory was consolation for 30-year-old Idowu after he missed out on Olympic gold last year. And it was fitting, too, as he was presented with his medal by former world and Olympic triple jump champion Jonathan Edwards - who was also BBC Sports Personality Of The Year in 1995. Idowu showed a lot of early promise, winning the English Schools' and AAA under-20 titles in 1997 before going on to clinch AAA Under-23 gold two years later. The One Show meets Phillips Idowu's family He took his his first major senior title when he won the 2001 European Cup with a jump of 17.23m and he then went on to clinch gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The likeable Londoner had yet to make his mark on the biggest stages, but that was until the 2008 Beijing Olympics where a superb leap of 17.62m landed him silver. And as we all know now, better was to follow in 2009.
