In 1990, Nobby, from the Bettws estate in Newport, South Wales, was struck by the demand for a football team for the estate's children.

In response, he set up Real Bettws Football Club and 13 years later runs eight teams from Under-18 to Under-six level.

The 63-year-old is responsible for everything from coaching through to washing kit and driving the coach, and thousands of children in Newport have already benefited from his enthusiasm and dedication.

In the early stages, the team had no facilities other than a pitch but this year, the community responded to Nobby's dedication by helping to raise over �420,000 to build new changing rooms in Nobby's honour.

Nobby, whose wife died five years ago, insists he is grateful to the community for their response to the project, saying: "I get as much out of Bettws as I give."

He received the trophy from former England footballer Paul Gascoigne, winner of the 1990 Sports Personality of the Year award.
