David Walliams was given a gold Blue Peter badge after raising �1m

With money continuing to come in over the next few weeks the organisers are confident of beating the event's previous highest total of �16m.

The money was raised by a variety of events including Saturday night's TV show and the Sport Relief Mile, which saw over 400,000 people take part.

Comedian David Walliams' swim across the channel raised �1m alone.

The Little Britain star, who was rewarded with a gold Blue Peter badge, was told the figure live on air.

"To raise a million is way beyond what I thought was possible - it's brilliant," he said.

"Without the support of the public there would have been no point in doing it, but people have been fantastic and I'd really like to thank them."

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes were among the celebrities who took part in the Sport Relief Mile.

Tony Blair and Prince William completed their miles ahead of the main events.

GMTV presenter Jenni Falconer was crowned Only Fools On Horses Show Jumper of the Year, narrowly seeing off pop music guru Nicki Chapman.

Sport Relief Executive producer Martyn Smith said: "It has been an amazing success, we saw the whole of Britain come together for the Sport Relief Mile.

"And then the hundreds of thousands of people who took part were treated to a phenomenal evening of entertainment.

"We would like to thank everyone for taking part and for all their donations - it really will make a difference."
