But as Gary Lineker found out, this footballing institution is as energetic and passionate about the game as ever.
In the words of Sir Bobby: "I love football, I need football, that's why I do it."
In the BBC documentary, Lineker follows his former England manager as he goes about the day-to-day running of Newcastle United.
From signing autographs to the nitty-gritty of coaching one of the biggest teams in the land, Robson's life is revealed to be almost 100% football.
Robson reflects on the highs and lows of his career, from his playing days at Fulham right through to his current job with his hometown club.
Fighting cancer
He reveals his pain at the hands of the English press while in charge of the national side, and his pride at his achievements on the biggest stage.
He also tells of his regrets: Maradona's 'Hand of God' at Mexico '86, losing the penalty shoot-out against Germany in 1990, and not spending enough time with his family.
Robson also talks about his fight against a malignant melanoma which threatened his life, and the doctors who said he would have to retire.
Among those to pay tribute to Sir Bobby are stars such as Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Franz Beckenbauer, Paul Gascoigne, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Terry Butcher and Alan Shearer.
All testify to the greatness of one of football's most revered and respected figures.
