Andy Roddick made it into the last 16 at Wimbledon for the first time in his career as he beat Tommy Robredo in straight sets 7-6 6-4 6-4.

The 20-year-old number five seed is yet to drop a set in the tournament, but he was made to fight all the way in the first set, as the Spaniard took him all the way to a tie-break.

The American needed a Robredo double-fault in the tie-break to take it 7-5 after 49 minutes.

Roddick, who had never previously been past the third round at Wimbledon, broke Robredo's serve midway through the second set.

The Spaniard continued to play inventive tennis, but Roddick had the momentum, and he soon wrapped up the third set to seal victory.

Roger Federer cruised into the fourth round, beating American Mardy Fish 6-3 6-1 4-6 6-1.

Federer, who has won more matches than any other on the ATP tour so far this year, will now meet Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the fourth round.

Paradorn Srichaphan ended Rafael Nadal-Parera's bold bid to become the youngest player since Bjorn Borg to reach the fourth round, beating the teenager 6-4 6-4 6-2.

The Spaniard, who turned 17 earlier this month, eventually succumbed but not before providing the enthralled court one crowd with a tantalising glimpse of the future.

Nadal broke Srichaphan to lead in the second set, but the number 12 seed from Thailand came back to take the set, before romping through the third.

Srichaphan, who is in the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time, will clash with Roddick for a place in the quarter-finals.

Sjeng Schalken became the first man into the last 16 after a comfortable straight sets win over Victor Hanescu of Romania.

The Dutch eighth seed, a quarter-finalist here last year, won 6-2 6-4 7-6 (7/3) to earn into a fourth round clash with ninth seed Rainer Schuettler.

The German twice came from behind to outlast American veteran Todd Martin 4-6 7-5 6-7 6-1 7-5.

Also progressing to the fourth round on Friday was the hard-hitting Max Mirnyi. The Belarussian beat the giant Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 7-6 3-6 6-3 7-6.
