Roger Federer booked his place in the third round of the men's singles at Wimbledon with an easy 7-5 6-1 6-1 win over Austrian number one Stefan Koubek.

The Swiss fourth seed started slowly and had to save a set point on his own serve before closing out the first set.

But he then hit top form and allowed his opponent only two more games before setting up an encounter with Mardy Fish, who beat fellow American Jan-Michael Gambill 6-4 6-4 6-1.

Federer is the highest seed left in the top half of the draw, but he is refusing to think too far ahead.

"I cannot afford to think I am already in the final," he said.

"There are other guys around who have an equally good chance and my next round will be pretty hard anyway so I won't be looking too far ahead.

"Mardy has a good fast surface game and he returns very well, so I will have to prepare properly."

Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan survived two match points to beat Olivier Mutis of France 4-6 1-6 7-6 (7/4) 7-5 7-5 in their second-round clash.

Srichaphan, who made headlines by beating Andre Agassi at Wimbledon last year, was under pressure from the start and dropped the first two sets.

But the 12th seed survived two match points when 5-4 down in the fourth set and clinched victory when Mutis netted a straightforward backhand volley at the end of the fifth.

Two other seeds failed to make it to the third round however.

Former world number one Gustavo Kuerten, seeded 17, went out in straight set to veteran American Todd Martin.

And the 16th seed from Russia, Mikhail Youzhny, also made an early exit, falling 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 6-2 to Spaniard Fernando Lopez.

Elsewhere, German ninth seed Rainer Schuettler beat France's Fabrice Santoro 6-2 6-3 6-3.

And in a first-round battle of unseeded players, German Lars Burgsmuller edged out Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-3 7-6 (7/5) 4-6 6-2.
