Switzerland's Patty Schnyder reached her first Grand Slam semi-final with victory over Lisa Raymond at the Australian Open. Raymond came into the match having upset number three seed Venus Williams in the third round.
But the American doubles specialist fell short in the opening set tie-break against Schnyder, going down 7-2.
From then on Schnyder took control, running out a 7-6 6-2 winner in one hour 19 minutes.
Schnyder plays either Belgian world number two Kim Clijsters or Russian sixth seed Anastasia Myskina in the last four.
"It's great, overwhelming," said Schnyder. "I'm just happy to be here, to come out again and play semis and give it the best I can."
Raymond made 44 unforced errors and only 24 winners as the pressure of a Grand Slam quarter-final took its toll.
"I don't think that I've been this disappointed losing a match," said Raymond.
"I really, really thought that I had a good shot of really having a breakthrough here.
"She's in the same position, though. It was a huge opportunity for her. You know, she maybe handled it a little better than I did."
