|  Safin reached the final in Melbourne in 2002 | Former Australian Open finalist Marat Safin booked a quarter-final against world number one Andy Roddick with a four-set win over James Blake. The Russian, who has slipped out of the top 50 after an injury-hit 2003, looked back to his brilliant best as he took a two-set lead against Blake. Blake hit back to take the third set on a tiebreak with a scorching backhand. However, Safin clinched the crucial break at 4-3 in the fourth set and went on to triumph 7-6 6-3 6-7 6-3.
