Golovin turns 16 on Sunday |
Fourteenth seed Anna Pistolesi was easily beaten by fifteen-year-old French schoolgirl Tatiana Golovin on day four of the Australian Open. Golovin, who turns 16 on Sunday, is ranked 354 in the world, but was a worthy 6-2 6-3 winner over Pistolesi.
Pistolesi has won eight tour titles in her career, while Golovin had won only a single tour match before Melbourne.
"I don't know if it's hit me yet, that I beat a top-20 player," she said. "I'm sure it'll sink in when I get home."
Golovin put some of the credit down to improving her fitness in the off-season.
"I worked really hard all winter with Mauresmo and Dechy and today it paid off," said the youngster.
Golovin will now face another seed in round three in the shape of Lina Krasnoroutskaya, who beat Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic.
