2220: So, we cover two matches and they both end with retirements. Just as well I'm not in the hotseat for Andy Murray's first-round match against Somdev Devvarman on Wednesday. There's still plenty happening around Flushing Meadows at the moment...
Ivanovic leads Pervak by a set and a break,
Verdasco is closing in on victory over Nieminen,
Li Na trails Halep by and set and a break, and
Kuznetsova has just broken the Errani serve. But it's time for me to scuttle away. Keep across
bbc.co.uk/tennis for updates on
Rafael Nadal and
Serena Williams, who play in the night session.
2213: Bally helps the trainer perform her duties, grabbing a couple of ice packs and rubbing them up and down Hampton's legs. Nice touch. Next up for the British number is Svetlana Kuznetsova or Sara Errani, probably on Thursday.
ELENA BALTACHA REACHES ROUND TWO OF THE US OPEN AFTER JAMIE HAMPTON RETIRES WHILE TRAILING 2-6 6-2 5-1 2207: Now I may have said Hampton was moving smoothly - and she was. But, well, she isn't any more. In fact, she isn't moving at all. The 21-year-old US wildcard cramps up while serving at 30-15 in game seven of the deciding set. To the floor she goes, clearly extremely dehydrated. The trainer comes rushing to her aid with ice packs. Bally even jogs round to lend her support. But it's to no avail - Hampton calls it a day.
5 live's David Law interview with Conor Niland: "I got sick on Sunday night, early Monday morning. Basically I had food poisoning and for the last two days have been very ill - after practice today I was ill again. I've been feeling pretty rotten for a couple of days and basically it was bad timing. Obviously the timing seems pretty cruel to me. I've been a couple of years without getting any sort of food poisoning and to get it two days before the biggest match of my career seems pretty weird."
2200: Baltacha is offering yet further evidence of the great strides she has made over the last couple of years. She's managed to secure a second break of serve in the deciding set again Hampton, who seems to be moving completely freely despite that leg complaint. Bally within touching distance of the second round now.
Baltacha leads Hampton 2-6 6-2 5-1. 2156: And
Davydenko does it, winning 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 6-0 2-6 6-2. Clearly he'll be fresh as a daisy come his second-round meeting with Potito Starace...
2152: That imminent fifth set I mentioned in the match between Ivan Dodig and Nikolay Davydenko did indeed materialise. NiDav leads his 32nd-seeded opponent 5-2 in the decider.
2150: Scores on the doors...
Ana Ivanovic, now being coached by Britain's Nigel Sears, at 4-4 in the opening set against Ksenia Pervak on Arthur Ashe. Over on Grandstand,
Fernando Verdasco appears to have averted the danger after dropping the first set to Jarkko Nieminen - the left-handed Spaniard now leads 3-6 6-4 4-1. Sixth seed and French Open champ
Li Na is up and running against Simona Halep on Louis Armstrong, but the Romanian is serving a 5-2 ahead.
2144: Quickly back to Court Seven, where Hampton has just received treatment for a leg problem.
Baltacha leads 2-6 6-2 2-1 and will now serve to consolidate her advantage.
2137: Bally strikes! A break in game three of the second set puts the British number one in pole position for a a place in round two. Still a fair way to go but it's looking good. Bally, by the way, has reached the second round once before - in 2010 - but never further.
Baltacha leads Hampton 2-6 6-2 2-1. Times tennis correspondent Neil Harman on Heather Watson: "It was the way she looked out there on the court. It's a huge amphitheatre and nothing disturbed her, even when the racket was coming from the other end and Sharapova. Is it possible she could be in the top 20 in a couple of years? Maybe it is. She moves extremely well and that's so important."
BBC Radio 5 live tennis correspondent Jonathan Overend: "Before yesterday I would have said
Heather Watson could reach the world's top 50, which would be a magnificent achievement, but after yesterday against Sharapova I'd say she can be top 20. If she can just develop a few weapons that can do damage at the top end of the game, there's no reason why she shouldn't have a wonderful career."
2117: Super stuff from
Elena Baltacha to level the match against in-form US wildcard Jamie Hampton. All in yellow today, Bally, but it was a red-hot performance in that second set.
Baltacha and Hampton all square at 2-6 6-2 0-0. 2113: So far so good for Bally in the second set - she's snapped up the double break and this one appears to be heading for a decider.
Hamtpon leads Baltacha 6-2 2-5. Francesca Schiavone beats Galina Voskoboeva 6-3 1-6 6-4 to reach round two of the US Open 2101: Plenty of other action taking place around Flushing Meadows just now... there was a shock alert on Louis Armstrong as Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan forced a decider against seventh seed
Francesca Schiavone but the Italian is now closing in on a three-set win. Another potential upset on Grandstand, where 19th seed
Fernando Verdasco is trailing Jarkko Nieminen of Finland by a set and a break. Ivan Dodig and Nikolay Davydenko look on course for a fifth set, while former doubles duo Shahar Peer of Israel and India's Sania Mirza are into a first-set tie-break.
2054: Good news, Brit fans. Bally breaks in game three of the second set to snatch the momentum away from her American opponent. The fightback starts here...
Hampton leads Baltacha 6-2 1-2. 2051: One Irishman down, one more remains.
Louk Sorensen is his name and he plays world number five Robin Soderling on Wednesday. RSod's been struggling with a wrist injury of late - anyone fancy a humongous upset?
2045: No sign of Nole's shoulder injury as the Serb eases past an unwell Niland to take his 2011 win-loss record to 58-2. Mightily impressive, but tougher tasks await.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC REACHES ROUND TWO OF THE US OPEN AFTER CONOR NILAND RETIRES WHILE TRAILING 6-0 5-1 2036: First blood to Hampton on Court Seven. Baltacha's giving a decent account of herself, only Hampton is playing out of her skin. The 21-year-old US qualifier has one foot in the second round, but don't be writing Bally off just yet.
Hampton leads Baltacha 6-2 1-0. 2040: Niland calls for the trainer at the end of the first set - he looks in a terrible way. But no treatment is taken and he staggers out of his chair to do battle - of sorts - once more. Djokovic holds comfortably in game one before Niland finally puts his name on the scoreboard. And at last some noise from the Arthur Ashe crowd. Got to love an underdog, no? Conor leans on his knees as if about to vomit... but fortunately he holds it in. Nice. Djokovic responds with another hold - he's conceded only two points on serve so far.
Djokovic leads Niland 6-0 2-1. twitlaz09 on Twitter: "Bally needs to get going sooner rather than later or it will be too late and it will all be over."
2019: Bad times for Ireland, then, and also for Great Britain out on Court Seven where Baltacha is up against it. Hampton secures the first service hold of the match in game three, breaks for the second time in game four and then holds again in numero five.
Hampton leads Baltacha 4-1. 2015: World number one Djokovic is probably the man you'd least like to play when feeling a little under the weather. He'll make you run. And run. And run a little bit more. Before ending your misery with a raking winner. Fair to say he's pulverising Niland so far - two breaks to the good and within a game of the opening set.
Djokovic leads Niland 5-0. 2013: You can answer that by tweeting me

2010: Over on Court Seven,
Baltacha makes the perfect start with a break of serve in game one - only for Hamtpon to hit back immediately and level things up at
1-1. Their only previous meeting came in round one of this year's Australian Open, with Bally winning 3-6 6-4 7-5. Anyone for a repeat today?
2005: Or not...
Djokovic opens with an easy hold against food poisoning-victim Niland and then breaks the Irishman to love in game two. Only Niland's second match at Grand Slam level, this. His debut came as a qualifier at Wimbledon earlier in the summer.
1957: British number one
Baltacha gets her US Open campaign under way over on Court Seven against 21-year-old American Jamie Hampton. They should be starting up in about 15 minutes, so I'm going to keep you posted on both matches. Bally's compatriot
Anne Keothavong faces the brilliantly-named Chanelle Scheepers much later on Court 16.
1954: Hearing reports that
Niland is suffering from food poisoning and threw up as he walked on to court. Not the best start for the biggest match of your life. He's looking pretty groggy out there.
1950: Djokovic and Niland are out on a sun-drenched but sparsely-populated Arthur Ashe Stadium. Presume the spectators are taking a break following
Caroline Wozniacki's victory over Nuria Llagostera Vives - but they'll be back shortly. Who wouldn't want to watch a man with a 57-2 win-loss ratio this season?
1945: Day two of the US Open and a couple of matches which I think may well be of particular interest to you.
Novak Djokovic v Conor Niland and
Elena Baltacha v Jamie Hampton. The finest male player in the world, the best male player in Ireland and the top female player in Britain. Let's get it on...
