Team Murray - which includes Andy's mum and Scottish comedian Billy Connolly - are delighted with their man's display at the start of the match as Britain's number one wins the opening set in 37 minutes
The frustrations build for the Austrian world number 11 as he struggles to contend with his opponent's mix of forehands, resilient defence from the baseline and dominant serving. Is there a way back for Melzer?
The answer is an emphatic "no" for the 29-year-old as he is broken again. Time to release some tension on his unsuspecting racquet. Murray eases through the second set and looks hot in the third
The first set may have been slightly competitive but Melzer's head soon drops and Murray powers through the final set to wrap up victory in 104 minutes. Only Dolgopolov stands in the way of a place in the semi-finals
After not fully firing in previous rounds, Vera Zvonareva turns on the style. The world number two, runner-up last year at Wimbledon and US Open, makes the quarters with a straight sets win over Iveta Benesova
China's 25-year-old Shuai Peng resorts to some unorthodox moves in an effort to keep up with Poland's Agnieska Radwanska as the pair battle for a place in the last eight in Melbourne
The 12th seed Radwanska has some apologising to do after whacking one of the ball boys with a ball. There are a few nervy moments at one set all but the Pole eventually pulls through for her quarter-final berth
Canadian hotshot Milos Raonic, who beat seeds Michael Llodra and Mikhail Youzhny in his two previous matches, winds up his serving arm and stuns Spaniard David Ferrer to take the first set. Another shock on the cards?
Raonic doesn't disappoint with 15 more aces but 68 unforced errors won't help anybody as the seventh seed Ferrer wins the next three sets to match his best result at the Australian Open in 2008 and makes the quarters
Next on Rod Laver, world number one Rafael Nadal faced 15th seed Croat Marin Cilic (pictured) - the Spaniard battled hard to take a two-set lead.
Nadal broke the Croat twice in the third to win the match 6-2 6-4 6-3 and set up a quarter-final clash against fellow Spaniard David Ferrer.
Belgium number three seed Kim Clijsters and Ekaterina Makarova are the last to play - the first set is error strewn and won by Clijsters following a tie-break
But Clijsters kicks on to win the second set 6-2 and will take on Polish 12th seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the last eight
