Robson needed treatment during her match against Bethanie Mattek-Sands

British teenager Laura Robson will miss both the Australian Open and the Fed Cup with a hip injury.

The 16-year-old picked up the injury during last week's Hopman Cup in Perth and will return to her base in Paris for three weeks of treatment.

Robson had been planning to play in the Australian Open qualifying tournament, which starts on Wednesday.

And she will also miss out on making her Fed Cup debut when Great Britain travel to Israel at the end of January.

Robson was representing Britain alongside Andy Murray at the Hopman Cup for the second year in succession, in preparation for attempting to come through qualifying at a Grand Slam for the first time in Melbourne.

However, the teenager required on-court treatment during her third singles match against American Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Friday and was forced to withdraw from the following mixed doubles rubber.

It has now been confirmed that Robson tore the envelope of her adductor muscle, and had she chosen to take part in qualifying in Melbourne she would have run the risk of tearing the muscle itself and missing up to 10 weeks.

The Londoner, who turns 17 on 21 January, will return to the academy in Paris where she is now under the guidance of French coach Patrick Mouratoglou.
