Troicki achieved his highest ranking of 24 in August 2009 |
Unseeded Viktor Troicki sealed a maiden ATP title with a 3-6 6-4 6-3 win over Marcos Baghdatis in the Kremlin Cup. After they traded breaks in the first set, Baghdatis took it in 30 minutes. A single break from Troicki, ranked 43 in the ATP rankings, levelled the match and the Serbian raced 4-1 ahead in the decider before winning in 103 minutes. In the women's event in Moscow, second seed Victoria Azarenka captured her second title of the season with a 6-3 6-4 win over Russian Maria Kirilenko. Kirilenko had only lost nine games in her previous four matches but was broken three times in the opening set. The sixth seed raced into a 4-0 lead in the next but Azarenka, from Belarus, won six games in a row to seal victory. Azarenka, who beat Maria Sharapova to win the Stanford tournament in August, now has five titles to her name. Azarenka proudly holds aloft her women's title in Moscow |
The victory left her in somewhat of a daze, however, and she said: "It was really tough to win the second set as Maria started pretty good dominating the play completely. "I tried hard to stay in the match battling for every point and finally it paid off. I'm really happy to win here at my third attempt though I still do not understand completely what I've done." The 21-year-old world number 10 had already secured her place in the season-ending WTA championships in Doha, which start on Tuesday. Troicki, meanwhile, was in jubilant mood after his victory. "Marcos was playing very good in the first set," he said. "But then I started playing better and better and at the end I won my first title. It feels unbelievable to win! "I like to play in Moscow very much. Next year I will come back to defend my title here."
