Roger Federer made a winning return to the Stockholm Open after a decade away from the tournament with a 6-1 6-2 second-round victory over Taylor Dent. Federer, who lost to Andy Murray in the Shanghai Masters final on Sunday, is targeting a strong end to 2010 having won only two events so far this year. The victory over Dent took 51 minutes and was Federer's 900th match on the ATP tour, resulting in his 727nd win. He next faces Stanislas Wawrinka, who beat Robin Haase 7-5 6-7 (6-8) 6-4. Federer took just 17 minutes to polish off the first set, notching two breaks of serve. | 606: DEBATE |
Dent made more of a contest of it in the second set, having two break points in the fourth game, but Federer upped the tempo and sealed his victory with a fine drop-shot. Afterwards, he was happy with his win, and said he looked forward to completing another century of matches. "That was a good night of tennis for me. Hardly any stupid mistakes, stay on the offensive, and tried out a few things," he said. "Also tried to throw in some serve and volley as the lead got bigger and bigger. "When I look back in 98, I played my first one, 900 matches later it's quite crazy but I've done so well. I've got a great win-loss record. "I couldn't ask for a better career. I think 1,000 should be rather easy to be honest, we play over 50 a year, so that should be done in a couple of years." Elsewhere, fourth seed Ivan Ljubicic hit 12 aces on his way to a 6-3 6-4 win over Arnaud Clement. Ljubicic now faces fellow Croatian Ivan Dodig who saw off Germany's Tobias Kamke 6-1 6-1. Wild card James Blake beat qualifier Matthias Bachinger 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-2) to set up a quarter-final against Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, who put out third seed Tomas Berdych 6-1 6-4. The remaining quarter-final will be between home favourite Robin Soderling and Florian Mayer. Second seed Soderling beat Benjamin Becker 6-3 6-3, while Mayer beat Michael Ryderstedt 6-4 6-4.
