1035: Murray, remember, should seal a place in the end-of-season Tour finals at London's 02 Arena if he reaches the semi-finals, so there's plenty to play for and you can follow the British number one's progress
here at www.bbc.co.uk/tennis. Many thanks for your contributions, bye for now.
1030: I'm afraid that's your lot. Short but sweet, Murray opens his Shanghai Masters campaign with a straightforward victory over Bai Yan. Next up, Jeremy Chardy of France. If he wins that, Tsongo or Youzhny will probably await in the quarter-finals. Then it could be Nadal in the semis and potentially Djokovic or Federer in the final.
1025: "I though it was good, I hit the ball cleanly, he played well some good points and he was quick but it was definitely a good first match - I hit a lot of balls and didn't make too many mistakes," says
Murray after his win. "I've been sick a couple of times since the US Open so I need to get more match-fit and to spend more time on the court - you lose strength if you're ill and not training, I'll hopefully spend more time on the court - today was a good start. I'll try and play similar to today - I'll try and dictate the points when I get into the rallies, he likes to use his forehand a lot so I'll try and keep it away from the middle of the court and see what happen."
Murray 6-2 6-2 Yan Another
two match points come Murray's way and this time he makes no mistake. At 40-15, the Scot turns to his tried - although not necessarily trusted - backhand and it has Yan scampering in from the baseline. The Chinese gets there but can only flick his forehand into the net.
Game, set and match Murray. Next up it's Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in what should be a far more testing examination of the world number four's title credentials.
* denotes next to serve Murray* 6-2 5-2 Yan Little to chose between the pair as we go to 30-30. Murray ups the ante to bring up his first
match point but then tries to bludgeon a forehand winner down the line and can only find the net. It seems he'll soon have a second bite of the cherry as he dominates an intoxicating rally but Yan displays some wonderful defensive skills to chase and chase and chase until Murray, at full stretch, nets a forehand volley at the net. Yan assumes control of the game and eventually comes through when Murray's attempt to retrieve gettable drop shop ends with the Scot casually prodding into the net.
* denotes next to serve Murray 6-2 5-1 *Yan Yan fights back from 40-0 down on the Murray serve to level at deuce. But Murray gets his act together and wallops a couple of winners to hold firm. Yan will now serve to stay in the match.
* denotes next to serve Murray* 6-2 4-1 Yan ...er, no. Murray bounces straight back with his third
break of the set to silence the crowd and move to within two games of the match. As mentioned earlier, Murray needs to reach the semis - or maybe even the quarters - to book his place in the end-of-season Tour finals, while his prize for winning the tournament would be 1,000 ranking points and a handsome cheque for $616,500.
* denotes next to serve Murray 6-2 3-1 *Yan "Yan now well and truly on the ropes," says your text commentator as Yan gets a
break back. Typical. Murray's serve is all over the place as the Chinese world number 465 moves to 0-40. Two break points go begging before Yan comes through at the third time of asking. Game on?
* denotes next to serve Murray* 6-2 3-0 Yan Yan now well and truly on the ropes. Murray snatches the
double-break and is well on course for a third-round meeting with France's Jeremy Chardy.
* denotes next to serve Murray 6-2 2-0 *Yan A comfortable hold sees Murray open up breathing space in the second set. Yan throws in a tasty pass up the line but he's being undermined by some understandable inconsistency. I say "understandable" because the Chinese had never faced an opponent ranked inside the world's top 100 until yesterday, and his victory over Stepanek was his first against a player ranked inside the top 300!
* denotes next to serve Murray* 6-2 1-0 Yan An early - and potentially decisive strike - for Murray. No excuses for Yan there. The Chinese romps to 40-0 but then capitulates in the face of some fairly routine Murray pressure. At deuce, the world number four chops a delicious backhand drop shot. Yan slips but it didn't look like he would have made it any way. And then he sends down a double fault to hand over the
break of serve.
* denotes next to serve Alex Willis on Twitter: "Sounds like the Chinese crowd could be giving the Indians a run for their money in the 'world's best tennis fans' compo."
0935: "Maybe Yan's wayward shots are down to his racquet. Did he pick it up at his local Bring and Bai sale?"
James in London via text on 81111 Murray 6-2 *Yan Murray hangs on to
wrap up the first set - but it wasn't all plain sailing in the end. Yan forces his way to 0-30 and after Murray comes back to level, the Chinese gets his first
break point of the match when Murray goes wide. Surely he won't, will he? No. Murray maintains his focus to come through a couple of lengthy rallies, finishing with a disguised drop shot that Yan reaches but can only dump into the net.
* denotes next to serve Murray* 5-2 Yan Gritty hold for Yan. He races to 40-0 and, playing with oodles of style and rhythm, looks set to keep himself in the set with some ease. But Murray changes things up with a couple of cute drop shots and his opponent has no answer. The Scot sees
two break points come and go before being gifted
a third when Yan double faults. But he squanders that one, too, and the Chinese crowd will their man over the line. Solid work from the 21-year-old.
* denotes next to serve Dundee Rocket on 606: "I fear it's Bye Bai. So one-sided it's untrue. Stepanek must have been pants to lose to this one!"
Murray 5-1 *Yan Slight lapse in concentration enables Yan to bring up deuce on the Murray serve. A couple of game points come and go for Murray as his serve begins to creak. Team Murray watch on a little anxiously in the stands. Yet their man regains his composure to force Yan into another unforced error and he's now within a game of the opening set.
* denotes next to serve Murray* 4-1 Yan Eventually Yan gets his name on the scoreboard. The Chinese wildcard goes 40-0 up by dominating a couple of lengthy rallies. Back comes Murray but the 23-year-old seems to goes wide at 40-30 and Yan is already walking back to his seat. Murray challenges... wide it is. Murray to serve for a 5-1 lead.
* denotes next to serve Murray 4-0 *Yan Another commanding hold to love for the man from Dunblane.
* denotes next to serve Murray* 3-0 Yan Some excellent aggression and precise execution from Murray, allied to a couple of unforced errors by Yan, give the Scot 0-40. The crowd rise to applaud a mini fightback from their man, but he eventually succumbs and there's the
double break. This is one-way traffic.
* denotes next to serve Murray 2-0 *Yan A hold to love puts Murray firmly in control. Chinese number four Yan has won his last two local Futures tournaments to climb 277 spots in just three weeks, but he is still 461 rankings places below Murray and it's already starting to show.
* denotes next to serve Murray* 1-0 Yan Yan admitted before this match that he was a big fan of British number one Murray. "We have been watching him since he came out," said the Chinese. "He has been our model." Indeed, Yan looks slightly in awe of his opponent as Murray gets to 0-30 in the opening game. He fights back to 30-30 with an array of powerful groundstrokes but Murray attacks the net to bring up
break point and takes it when Yan fires long. First blood to the world number four.
* denotes next to serve 0849: Yan to serve, here we go...
0848: Murray can be forgiven if he wasn't expecting to face Yan today. The 21-year-old from Nanjing, ranked 465th in the world, shocked Radek Stepanek 6-3 6-4 in round one. "It's my first time in a top level tournament, so it's really an unexpected performance for me," said Yan. "I have some pressure because this is my home country. Murray is a very talented player - much better than me. I hope to learn from him in our match."
0845: Here come the players. The fans go wild for a bandana-wearing Yan, and there's a big cheer for Murray too. As always, I want to be hearing from you via

0835: World number four Murray hasn't had the best time of it recently,
losing to Ivan Ljubicic at last week's China Open and complaining of a stomach bug. Talking of which, today's opponent
Yan has only been back playing since July after an 18-month break in which he recovered from a series of niggling injuries and two operations to cure a hereditary stomach complaint.
0830: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have already booked their places in November's season-ending
World Tour finals at London's 02 Arena - is
Andy Murray set to join them? Reach the semi-finals of this week's Shanghai Masters and it's job done. The Scot gets his tournament started with a second-round match against Chinese wildcard Bai Yan. They're due on court at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena shortly, so let's get this show on the road...
