1030: I'm afraid that's your lot. Short but sweet, Murray opens his Shanghai Masters campaign with a straightforward victory over Bai Yan. Next up, Jeremy Chardy of France. If he wins that, Tsongo or Youzhny will probably await in the quarter-finals. Then it could be Nadal in the semis and potentially Djokovic or Federer in the final.

1025: "I though it was good, I hit the ball cleanly, he played well some good points and he was quick but it was definitely a good first match - I hit a lot of balls and didn't make too many mistakes," says Murray after his win. "I've been sick a couple of times since the US Open so I need to get more match-fit and to spend more time on the court - you lose strength if you're ill and not training, I'll hopefully spend more time on the court - today was a good start. I'll try and play similar to today - I'll try and dictate the points when I get into the rallies, he likes to use his forehand a lot so I'll try and keep it away from the middle of the court and see what happen."

Another two match points come Murray's way and this time he makes no mistake. At 40-15, the Scot turns to his tried - although not necessarily trusted - backhand and it has Yan scampering in from the baseline. The Chinese gets there but can only flick his forehand into the net. Game, set and match Murray. Next up it's Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in what should be a far more testing examination of the world number four's title credentials.

Little to chose between the pair as we go to 30-30. Murray ups the ante to bring up his first match point but then tries to bludgeon a forehand winner down the line and can only find the net. It seems he'll soon have a second bite of the cherry as he dominates an intoxicating rally but Yan displays some wonderful defensive skills to chase and chase and chase until Murray, at full stretch, nets a forehand volley at the net. Yan assumes control of the game and eventually comes through when Murray's attempt to retrieve gettable drop shop ends with the Scot casually prodding into the net.

Yan fights back from 40-0 down on the Murray serve to level at deuce. But Murray gets his act together and wallops a couple of winners to hold firm. Yan will now serve to stay in the match.

A comfortable hold sees Murray open up breathing space in the second set. Yan throws in a tasty pass up the line but he's being undermined by some understandable inconsistency. I say "understandable" because the Chinese had never faced an opponent ranked inside the world's top 100 until yesterday, and his victory over Stepanek was his first against a player ranked inside the top 300!

An early - and potentially decisive strike - for Murray. No excuses for Yan there. The Chinese romps to 40-0 but then capitulates in the face of some fairly routine Murray pressure. At deuce, the world number four chops a delicious backhand drop shot. Yan slips but it didn't look like he would have made it any way. And then he sends down a double fault to hand over the break of serve.

Yan forces his way to 0-30 and after Murray comes back to level, the Chinese gets his first break point of the match when Murray goes wide. Surely he won't, will he? No. Murray maintains his focus to come through a couple of lengthy rallies, finishing with a disguised drop shot that Yan reaches but can only dump into the net.

Gritty hold for Yan. He races to 40-0 and, playing with oodles of style and rhythm, looks set to keep himself in the set with some ease. But Murray changes things up with a couple of cute drop shots and his opponent has no answer. The Scot sees two break points come and go before being gifted a third when Yan double faults. But he squanders that one, too, and the Chinese crowd will their man over the line. Solid work from the 21-year-old.

Yan admitted before this match that he was a big fan of British number one Murray. "We have been watching him since he came out," said the Chinese. "He has been our model." Indeed, Yan looks slightly in awe of his opponent as Murray gets to 0-30 in the opening game. 0848: Murray can be forgiven if he wasn't expecting to face Yan today. The 21-year-old from Nanjing, ranked 465th in the world, shocked Radek Stepanek 6-3 6-4 in round one. "It's my first time in a top level tournament, so it's really an unexpected performance for me," said Yan. "I have some pressure because this is my home country. Murray is a very talented player - much better than me. I hope to learn from him in our match."
