Francesca Schiavone ends Kimiko Date run in Tokyo

Schiavone was too strong for the 40-year-old Date Krumm

French Open champion Francesca Schiavone beat local favourite Kimiko Date Krumm 6-3 6-3 to reach the Pan Pacific Open quarter-finals.

The top two seeds, Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva, also cruised through but Jelena Jankovic, seeded third, lost 6-4 6-4 to Kaia Kanepi.

Date Krumm celebrated her 40th birthday with a win over Daniela Hantuchova.

But one day after those heroics she proved no match for the fifth-seeded Italian, who was far too strong.

Schiavone outhit Date Krumm and broke serve three times in the first set to lead 5-1 in Tokyo.

Date Krumm fought back in the second to take a 3-2 lead but was broken in the seventh game and was unable to recover.

606: DEBATE

Schiavone said: "I said to her at the end it was an honour to play her. I've followed her career and she's not just a great tennis player, she's a great person.

"To come back [following a 12-year retirement] and show the people anything is possible is really inspiring."

Schiavone's next match is against Estonia's Kanepi, who has now won three of her four meetings against Jankovic. The Serb has failed to make any quarter-finals since the French Open in early June.

In other matches, Denmark's Wozniacki downed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1 6-2 and will meet Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the quarter-finals.

Zvonareva beat Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-4 6-0 to set up an encounter with the seventh-seed and fellow Russian Elena Dementieva, while American qualifier Coco Vandeweghe will meet eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.
