In the first of this year's finals at Flushing Meadows, top-seeded pair Liezel Huber and Bob Bryan win their second Grand Slam title in mixed doubles on Arthur Ashe
Unseeded duo Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Kveta Peschke, the first Pakistani/Czech pairing in mixed doubles, suffer a 6-4 6-4 defeat by the American duo, who won the French Open title last year
In the first men's quarter-finals on Thursday, Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka, playing in his first Gland Slam last-eight match, twice breaks Russian Mikhail Youzhny's serve to win the first set 6-3
World number 14 Youzhny has twice beaten Wawrinka on hard courts, including a victory in Miami earlier this year, and the 28-year-old converts his fourth set point in an intriguing second-set tie-breaker
But Youzhny fails to capitalise on his momentum as he loses his opening service game of the third set, allowing Wawrinka to respond and once again regain the lead at 2-1
There's a bit of glamour on Arthur Ashe as American tennis legend Chris Evert (left) is joined by American model and ex-wife of Billy Joel - Christine Brinkley. Keep hold of your hat Christine - it's blowy out there
It's all getting a bit too much for Wawrinka whose aching limbs are still feeling the effects from exhausting wins over Andy Murray and Sam Querrey. He loses the fourth set 3-6 as his Russian opponent grows in confidence
The match goes beyond three hours and as darkness looms over the Arthur Ashe Stadium how will the players cope with a gut-busting five setter?
The last set has it all. Moon balls, medical time-outs for Youzhny's toe injury and a hatful of stunning rallies as the pair fight for US Open survival. Youzhny comes through 3-6 7-6 (9-7) 3-6 6-3 6-3 in four gruelling hours
World number one Rafael Nadal is on night duty once again as he takes on fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the last of the quarter-finals
Actress Charlize Theron is a regular at Flushing Meadows and she braves the surprisingly chilly night-time temperatures to watch Nadal and Verdasco
Verdasco sees an early break disappear in the first set and from then on knows he is fighting an uphill battle
Nadal serves brilliantly to come through 7-5 6-4 6-3 in two hours and 21 minutes and reach the semi-finals for the third year in a row
