First up on Arthur Ashe on day six is Serbia's number four seed Jelena Jankovic, a finalist two years ago, and she finds herself up against Estonia's Kaia Kanepi in blustery conditions
It is Kanepi, the Wimbledon quarter-finalist, who adapts better to the conditions and she races into the fourth round with a comfortable 6-2 7-6 (7-1) win to send a frustrated Jankovic packing
The first men's winner of the day is Spanish 21st seed Albert Montanes, who sees Japanese opponent Kei Nishikori retire at 6-2 2-1 down after only 38 minutes on court
In the fourth round Montanes will meet Sweden's Robin Soderling, after the fifth seed enjoys a comfortable afternoon in dumping out Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker 6-2 6-3 6-3 in one hour and 42 minutes
On Louis Armstrong, top seed in the women's draw Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark makes short work of Taiwan's Chan Yung-Jan, securing a brutal 6-1 6-0 victory in only 73 minutes to reach the last 16
There, Wozniacki will come up against 2006 champion Maria Sharapova. The Russian was in even more ruthless form as she swept aside American wildcard Beatrice Capra 6-0 6-0
As always, 14th seed Sharapova proves popular with the autograph hunters at Flushing Meadows
Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic takes on France's 17th seed Gael Monfils on the Grandstand Court and they share a tie-break apiece in what looks like becoming an exciting third-round contest
But Monfils, who has never been beyond the fourth round in New York, gives himself another chance to reach the quarters by eventually easing through 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 6-4
Over on Arthur Ashe, five-time champion Roger Federer is back in action as he faces Paul-Henri Mathieu. The always fashion-conscious Swiss has the New York skyline on his trainers
Federer is never in anything other than complete control as he masters the windy weather and his opponent as Mathieu is put to the sword 6-4 6-3 6-3 in one hour and 39 minutes
Flushing Meadows regular Will Ferrell is in attendance to watch Federer's win. The actor played a charity match alongside Andy Murray at last year's tournament
Mardy Fish is the first American into the fourth round as he grinds out a five-set win over France's Arnaud Clement on Louis Armstrong
Novak Djokovic gets pride of place as the first match of the evening session on Arthur Ashe and polishes off the first set against James Blake in a brisk 22 minutes
Blake waits to have a decision reviewed under the umpire's watchful gaze
After a brief scare in the second-set tie-break, the Serbian is safely through with a 6-1 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 win as his hunt for a second Grand Slam to accompany his Australian Open triumph of 2008 continues
New York Yankees baseball star Derek Jeter adds some all American glamour as he takes in the action accompanied by actress Minka Kelly
Maria Kirilenko is brought to her knees by fellow Russian and 2004 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova as she goes a break down in the opening game
Kuznetsova finishes the match with another break as she eases through to a fourth-round match against Dominika Cibulkova with a 6-3 6-4 win
