Keothavong has struggled since returning from a serious knee injury

Britain's Anne Keothavong saw her US Open campaign end at the first hurdle against Yung-Jan Chan and then raised doubts about her future.

Keothavong, who reached the third round in 2008 and broke into world's top 50 before an injury halted her progress, went down 2-6 6-1 6-1.

"I'm not the player I was two years ago here," said the 26-year-old.

"Who knows what's going to happen after this? I'm going to need time to reassess and decide what I want to do."

Keothavong, ranked 142nd in the world after a lengthy injury lay-off last season, had been hoping to join compatriot Elena Baltacha in the second round.

But after dominating the first set in blistering heat, Keothavong lost 12 of the next 14 games as the world number 77 from Chinese Taipei took control.

It was a second disappointing Grand Slam performance in succession for the Londoner, having lost to Anastasia Rodionova in the first round of Wimbledon despite leading 4-0 in the final set.

"My ranking and my tennis isn't where I would want it to be, I have higher expectations for myself," said Keothavong, who was ranked 48th in February 2009 before suffering the second serious knee injury of her career.

Keothavong had no answer to Chan's use of "moonballs" - slow, defensive, looping shots - in her 122-minute defeat on a sweltering Court 14.

"I played a good first set and was completely dominating and then she changed her tactics and started throwing in the moonballs and I just didn't deal with it very well," said the British number three.

"You either have to be brave and take it on and come forward or step back and be strong and work your way within the point. I got stuck in between and it wasn't very good.

606: DEBATE

"In some ways you've got to give it to her because it worked and she just kept doing it. It's not the way I expected her to play but against me today it was effective. She changed her tactics and that's where I shot myself in the foot.

"I've been playing long enough, I should know better. It happens to all of us when you might not think as clearly as you would like out there."

After storming through the opening set, Keothavong lost her serve three times in the second and then took a medical timeout after being broken again in the third game of the decider.

The Londoner received treatment for blisters to her feet and was unable to convert six break points as the match slipped away.

There was more bad news for Britain when Ross Hutchins lost in the doubles.

Hutchins and his American partner Scott Lipsky went down 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to fifth seeds Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach.
