Murray will try to win his first Grand Slam title at the US Open next month

Andy Murray will have to endure the fierce afternoon heat in Cincinnati once again when he takes on Mardy Fish in the quarter-finals on Friday.

The Briton struggled in temperatures of over 30C as he battled past Ernests Gulbis in three sets on Thursday.

But Murray's request for a later start on Friday was unsuccessful and he takes on Fish at 12pm local time (1700 BST).

Andy Roddick and Roger Federer are also in action, with Rafael Nadal playing Marcos Baghdatis in the night match.

Murray is on a seven-match winning streak after beating Nadal and Federer on his way to taking the Toronto title last week, and that run appeared to be taking its toll against Gulbis on Thursday.

"Every match since the first one in Toronto has been between 12pm and 3pm and it was really warm on the court today," he told BBC Radio 5 live after the match.

"I got a bit burnt on the face and also, because of the exercise, a bit dehydrated as well, which probably doesn't help. I'll try and make sure I recover as best as possible for tomorrow."

However, the Scot's hopes of getting a helping hand from the tournament officials were dashed as he was scheduled for the opening match on Friday.

"I think it's fair to request (a later start) after the last eight or nine days," he said before hearing the order of play, "but you never know what's gong to happen. It would be nice to play at 5pm or 6pm, that would help me out a little bit."

And despite the US Open starting on 30 August, Murray insisted that he was keen to continue his winning run, saying, "You want to try and wins as many matches as possible".

Murray has a 3-3 record against Fish but has lost to the world number 37 twice this year, in Miami and at Queen's Club, where the Briton was upset by Fish leaving the court because of bad light at 3-3 in the final set.

"It was a tough one for me," said Murray. "I wasn't playing particularly well around that time but I felt like I had a chance at winning that match.

"Obviously the light made it a little bit tougher. I'd like to try and beat him tomorrow."

Murray and Fish will be followed onto the Stadium Court by home favourite Roddick against Novak Djokovic, with Federer then taking on Nikolay Davydenko.
