Serena storms to fourth Wimbledon title (UK only) World number one Serena Williams will miss three WTA tournaments in the build-up to the US Open after cutting her foot in a restaurant last week. Williams, 28, had to have surgery on her right foot after she cut it on broken glass and will now miss events in Istanbul, Cincinnati and Montreal. The injury means the American could face a fight to be fit for the US Open which starts on 30 August. "I'm so upset I won't be able to play in the upcoming events," she said. "I can't wait to get back on the courts." On 8 July, five days after winning her fourth Wimbledon crown and 13th major title, Williams played with an injured foot against Kim Clijsters in an exhibition in Brussels before a world record tennis crowd. Two days later, she attended the wedding of NBA star Carmelo Anthony in New York. In a photograph, it appeared she had two bandages on the top of her right foot. The Rogers Cup in Montreal finishes only a week before the start of the season's last Grand Slam, which begins at Flushing Meadows on 30 August. | 606: DEBATE |
So it could mean that Williams might not play competitively between her most recent triumph at Wimbledon, earlier in July, and the US Open, although there is one tournament in New Haven prior to the fortnight in New York. In addition to clinching her fourth Wimbledon crown where she beat Russia's Vera Zvonareva 6-3 6-2 and earned her 13th Grand Slam title, Williams also won the Australian Open for a fifth time in January. But she has only competed in six events this season, including the three Grand Slams. If Williams is fit to play at the US Open, she will go looking for her fourth title there, her first having come in 2001.
