Roger Federer has dropped to number three in the world - his lowest ranking for seven years - after his quarter-final defeat at Wimbledon.

The six-time Wimbledon champion was replaced at number two in the ATP rankings by Serb Novak Djokovic, who reached the Wimbledon semi-final.

Swiss Federer has not been outside of the top two in the world since 2003.

He has won the US Open five times, the French Open once, and sealed his fourth Australian title earlier this year.

But Federer, the number-one seed at this year's Wimbledon, was beaten in four sets by eventual runner-up Tomas Berdych.

He also tumbled out of the French Open to Robin Soderling at the quarter-final stage.

Federer had not lost before the final at SW19 since 2002 and was bidding to win a record-equalling seventh title.

After his Wimbledon exit, the 28-year-old said he was struggling with back and thigh problems picked up at a pre-Wimbledon grass-court event in Halle, Germany.

He said he was looking forward to a rest, but would be ready to "attack again" at the US Open at the end of August.
