Marray and Smith were the last Britons in any senior doubles competition |
British duo Jonny Marray and Anna Smith lost in the third round of the mixed doubles - going down 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 to Dmitry Tursunov and Vera Dushevina. The unseeded Britons were edged out in the first set before hitting back from a break down to level at 4-4 in the second set and then force a tie-break. Marray's prowess at the net helped them win that to the delight of some vocal fans in the last match of the day. The Russian duo broke in the second game of the decider and quickly won. Marray and Smith, who were the last remaining British pair in any of the senior doubles competitions, had a breakback point in the third game which they failed to take and although they cut the deficit to 3-1, it was only a brief respite. Tursunov's powerful serve finally proved the difference as he and Dushevina finally clinched victory just before 2105 BST.
