2100: This from Sir Muzzington as he steps into the locker-room: "It was a good match. I started very well, and as the match went on Gilles started to come back into it. I need to keep playing better, but the first week was very good - three straight set wins, and the way I was playing coming into it that's obviously very good. I've conserved a lot of energy, so it's nice to have some quick matches. I'll rest on Sunday, and then get ready for some tough matches in the second week."
2054:One hour 50, and Murray is delighted - he flings both wristbands plus his one remaining ball into the adoring crowd, and Mama Murray applauds with a unadulterated beamer on her chops. Near-perfect display, and if you had to pick out one man above all the others on the evidence of this first week, you'd probably look past five-set Fed and Rafa and settle on first Robin Soderling and then, in all honesty, Andy Murray.
Simon 1-6 4-6 4-6 Murray Murray for the match, this last set everything you could want from a tennis contest. It's been a joy to watch. Great approach, into the net... Simon's flail drifts wide. 15-0. Big serve, return is... long. 30-0. Ouch - a female line-judge wears a long first serve on the left buttock. Pantomine groans of dismay as a backhand falls into the net, but it's 40-15 - ace! He's through, and in quite brilliant fashion.
Simon 1-6 4-6 4-5 Murray *Wonderful angle from Murray on the forehand cross-court for 0-15. Is this the game? Ach, lazy backhand slice from Murray for 15-15, when he should have been at 0-30. Brilliant fiery return, a little flick on the net cord helping out, but Simon conjures up only his second ace for 30-30. Ooh, backhand into the tramlines - break point! Come on now... mais non, backhand wide himself. That's a great volley though for another break point, his sixth of the set - wonderful exchange, fizzing over the tape - that looks long and loopy from Simon... it is! What a time to break...
Anon via text to 81111 : "Watching Keane live in Cannock Forest and still following the Murray Match!"
* Simon 1-6 4-6 4-4 Murray Every point a battle now, and if you're not watching this live, get yourself all over the highlights later. Big serve out to the backhand side to give Murray some daylight at 40-15, but Simon's in this - steepling overhead to win the point... and he's stuck it wide! Querrey a break up in the fifth now on Ct.1...
Simon 1-6 4-6 4-3 Murray *"Allez Simon!" yells an anxious Frenchwoman high in the stands. Oh, sheer brilliance from Murray, sprinting to an unreturnable Simon overhead and somehow creaming it back for a stunning winner - Simon throws his racquet in despair, and the old stadium is in bedlam. Two break points - oooosh, one lost into the net, the other with saved with nerveless, on-the-nose drives from Simon. The standard of tennis in this set has been quite wonderful. Deuce - second serve - hmm, chance for Murray there, but Simon jammed it up into his sternum. The Frenchman holds. Light beginning to fade - should this match go to a fourth set, you'd have to think they'd bring the roof over, and that would entail a half-hour delay.
canchaz on 606: "Is Murray playing that well, or is Simon off his game? I would hardly call a 2 sets to love lead and one set won 6-1 adds up to Simon not giving Murray an easy ride. I expected a much closer match from Simon."
* Simon 1-6 4-6 3-3 Murray Over on Court no.1, Malisse has levelled at two sets all. Poised. Lovely volleyed lob from Murray, his 12th ace to follow, and then a double - his first of the day. Netted return from Gilles, and we're level again. Various shouts on Twitter for Simon lookalikeys - a young Ray Liotta, Joaquin Phoenix, whatshisface from Twilight...
Ian, south Leicestershire via text to 81111: "Brought my wife out for a meal for her birthday and all she can do is constantly watch the live text updates for Andy's match."
Simon 1-6 4-6 3-2 Murray *Two of the best points of the championship - every shot in the book from Murray, and some that need to be added - one blistering rally ended with a fantasy lob, another with a perfect dropper. 0-30. So close to 0-40, but that's a super forehand from Simon, a poor backhand from Murray, and no... yes! Drop-shot so close to failure that it could only be brilliant. Deuce. Crashing backhand cross-court from Simon, and this game is an absolute delight - ah, deuce again as Murray creams one of those punchy backhands down the line. Forehand now, angled, fizzing, for a break point... first serve long. Second - Lordy, where did Simon pull that forehand from? Deuce again. Another forehand winner from Simo... out? Must have been close, that one. Murray advantage - saved with a big first serve. And another for game point (10 minutes and counting now, this game), taken with another slashing forehand drive.
* Simon 1-6 4-6 2-2 Murray All sorts going on in the stands now - a bloke in dark shades with something of the Lance Armstrongs about him has a hairy arm around a lady's shoulders, and chews on her ear-lobe as she grins lasciviously. This country... What's that? You think he's French? From the slightly smug look on his face, I'd say he thinks he's a hero. Maybe he is. Hold to love from Murray, and this set is the best of the match so far.
Simon 1-6 4-6 2-1 Murray *An engorged mosquito flies threatening sorties around my exposed ankles as Simon wins a Hawk-Eye challenge. Be gone, you blood-sucking freeloader. Absolute doozy of a dipping cross-court dabber from Simon, but that's loose - wide to the forehand side, 30-15. Guy Forget in the stands, his curly mop a distant memory. "Oh Andy!" shouts Andy, as a forehand bites net at 30-30, and a raking backhand takes the Frenchman back in front on serve.
* Simon 1-6 4-6 1-1 Murray Chap in the crowd there who looks like a young Peter Davidson - pale English skin pinked by the summer sun, trilby with brightly coloured hatband, creme blazer. Not a look I could carry, but he's pulling it off a treat. Simon definitely starting to come back into this, hitting those dipping forehands with zest, and he'll have a deuce here as Murray pays the price for an ambitious flat forehand over the highest part of the net. Crunch - big serves, level pegs.
Simon 1-6 4-6 1-0 Murray *"Relentless brilliance from Murray," says Mark Petchey on BBC TV, and you've got to agree with him. Oh, super from Simon, wobbling at 0-30 but coming back with flashing forehand and another drop-dead stop-volley. Murray long off a second serve return, and Simon wriggles free.
* Simon 1-6 4-6 Murray Not even a squeak of an upset - hold to love. Murray yet to lose a set in the championship so far - I have got that right, haven't I? Let's look at the stats - Simon actually hit more winners than Murray in that set, 12 to nine, but the service returns made all the different - 43% landed from Simon, 73% from Muzzington.
Simon 1-6 4-5 Murray *Winners at last starting to flow from Simon's wand. With a flourish he crashes away a mid-court forehand, and Murray will serve for a two set lead.
* Simon 1-6 3-5 Murray "GAAAGH!" shouts Simon, in surprisingly Anglo-Saxon fashion, as he slams a backhand into the net. Not even a hint of a shoulder shrug. France truly is changing. Murray holds, and there's a somewhat muted response - there hasn't been sufficient danger or contest to get the adrenaline and fire flowing quite yet.
Simon 1-6 3-4 Murray *Who said Tsonga at the Aussie Open in '08? Give yourself a pistol-shaped finger-point plus wink next time you see yourself in a mirror. Pressurised volley long from Simon for deuce, and Murray looks like he's in there - nope, sensational stretching volley on the tape which lays down and dies before Murray can dash in. Sweet foxer up next, holding the backswing a fraction longer before whipping to the forehand side with Murray guessing left.
* Simon 1-6 2-4 Murray Chris Hoy, Vicky Pendleton - the Olympic pantheon perched on edge of well-cushioned seats. Rest those legs, cycling legends. Almost some sympathy for See-mon out there - nothing at all for him on the Murray serve. Nice fact for you: Murray has won his last 19 matches against French players. You've got till the next game to guess who the last m'sieur to vanquish him was.
Steve, Leeds via text to 81111 : "Murray seems in a bit of a rush to finish this to get out and watch the second half of the football. Bet he fancies having a laugh at Roddick when the USA lose!"
Simon 1-6 2-3 Murray *Two ladies in the crowd there, both sporting crimson kipper ties, one with the letters A-N-D-Y picked out vertically, the other with A-C-E. Only in tennis. Simon holds, but everything's a battle on his serve. Kelly Holmes back in the Royal Box, and let me tell you this: she is
ripped.
* Simon 1-6 1-3 Murray Hold to love from Murray, and this is peachy stuff. I had a stat all ready here about the success of French males at these championships (they got more players into the third round than any other nation) but I might have to bung it in the bin.
Simon 1-6 1-2 Murray *Finally a hold for the embattled Frenchman. Up in the VIP seats, his coach Thierry Tulasne grimaces. I'm not surprised - he's got a shaved head, yet he's forgotten both cap and shades. On Court no.1. Sam Querrey ('cross the Mersey - see earlier Twitter exchange) is two sets to one up on Xavier Malisse - and the winner of that one meets the winner of this one on Monday.
* Simon 1-6 0-2 Murray "She's mangled," the man to my right says with confidence. Murray content to slice all pace of the ball, and Simon doesn't like that one little bit. He won't like this either - a pal has texted me to say that a £3 accumulator he had on the World Cup group winners has raked him £1600, with France's despair a key part of that. Va-va-voom.
Simon 1-6 0-1 Murray *Double-fault from Simon, and he's not helping himself here. Oof, lucky net-cord from Murray, but he's returning like a dream out there - break taken, and a lady in crowd who appears to be wearing a black bra over the outside of a grey swim-suit hoists a plastic pot of Pimm's and applauds with hand on exposed thigh. Some stats from that first set. Murray landed 94% of his service returns in as opposed to 68% from the Frenchman. He hit 10 winners - six more than Simon - and only made four unforced errors - half as many as his opponent.
* Simon 1-6 Murray Mama Judy and Ladyfriend Kim there in adjacent seats as always, shades pulled low, Judy sporting a dark blue cap. Simon thinks he's in with a sniff at 0-30, and there are angsty murmurs around Centre. Mmm, that ace will silence them, but Simon has an easy overhead to put away her... Lord alive, he's shanked that like a once-a-month club toiler. Total control of the next point, and Murray is on blistering form here - set up, a mere 23 minutes on the match clock.
Simon 1-5 Murray *Crowd-pleasing slider down the line from the Murray forehand to get to 15-30. Nope - backhand slicer into the net, and he didn't quite get his feet right for that one, and when Simon fizzes a forehand out wide, Murray slips on the toasted turf to leave the gates unmanned. Ah, perfect return, like a hairy-headed Agassi reborn, and he'll have a break point - controlled all the way, won with sheer weight of shot pressure.
* Simon 1-4 Murray Big hair from Simon, if you haven't seen him recently - it looks like he's backcombed it while wet and then run some Studio Line gel through it. Funk it spritz it etc. Rapid-fire hold from Murray, the first serve clicking like a dream. Stellar sporting talent returning to the Royal Box. Glenn Hoddle wouldn't miss this for the world.
Simon 1-3 Murray *Young lad in the crowd there with a tartan Tam O'Shanter wedged on his head, a startling flush of fake ginger hair sticking out underneath. Is that official Wimbledon merchandise? Delicate fizzing lob from Murray to leave the Frenchman stranded with nose on tape, but Simon is finding his range with the groundstrokes - fine ding-dong, ended with a chase-down of a so-so Murray dropper for his first game of the match.
* Simon 0-3 Murray One dashing return winner aside, Simon struggling against the Murray serve here - six unforced errors already, and his tactic of attacking the Murray second serve is brave but foolhardy so far. Let's have a look at the combatants' respective records on grass. Simon's win/loss ration is at 15:11, Murray's at 37-10. Auspicious.
Simon 0-2 Murray * Dangerous player, Simon - his ranking is down at 32 this week, but that's as much to do with injury as anything else. Nervous start here though - forehand wide, backhand long, and there's a chance for an early break here - mmm, taken with ease. Ideal early exchanges for the British hope.
* Simon 0-1 Murray They've met four times before, these two - on a tennis court, at least - with Murray leading the head-to-heads 3-1. Won the last three meetings too, although this is the first time they've played on grass. Splendid opening game from Murray, finding the line with a crisp backhand cross-court and landing all but one of his first serves to hold to 15.
1900: Absolutely rammed out there on Henman Hill. Royal Box looking a touch empty, but I'm sure Sir Bobby, His Royal Hoyness and Sachin Tendulkar will be back shortly.
1855: Shadows across almost all of Centre now, just a small rhombus of bright sunlight in the corner under the VIP seats. Roof etiquette for you: they'll play for as long as they can in natural conditions, and if the match is still alive when the light fails, there'll be a half-hour delay while the roof comes over. And they won't play past 2230, whatever happens.
1850: Some desperate dashing going on from the Centre Court crowd. Sustenance and beverages are needed, toilet breaks an absolute essential, but the locker-room door is opening already - is that a Murray foot coming out?
1845: Let's get down to business. After another extraordinary five-setter on Centre (hats off Philipp Petzschner, standing ovation Rafa) we're finally ready for Andy Murray.
1843: Good afternoon, and welcome to the Pyramid Stage, where the Scissor Sisters will shortly be performi... what's that? I'm terribly sorry - I appear to have started the wrong text commentary.
