Lopez sends Nadal crashing out

Top seed Rafael Nadal crashed out of the Aegon Championships quarter-finals at Queen's with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 defeat by fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

The loss ended Nadal's run of 24 wins in a row and came five days after he secured his fifth French Open title.

Eighth seed Lopez edged the first-set tie-break before making the vital break in the ninth game of the second and served out for the match.

Lopez will play Mardy Fish, who beat Andy Murray, in the semi-finals.

The American needed 30 minutes to wrap up a three-set win over world number four Murray before returning to court to defeat 12th seed Michael Llodra 6-4 6-4.

Nadal's defeat also ended his 14-match unbeaten run on grass as the world number one made a number of uncharacteristic unforced errors to hand fellow Spaniard Lopez the victory.

An overhead smash into the net gave Lopez set point at 6-5 in the first-set tie-break, which he converted at the first attempt.

The second set saw Lopez break Nadal's serve in the fifth game but the muscular Mallorcan immediately broke back to level the match at 3-3.

But the turning point came in the ninth game as Lopez earned two break points against serve.

A double fault saw Nadal concede the game at 5-4, allowing Lopez the opportunity to serve out for the straight-sets win.

"His serve was very good," said Nadal, who withdrew from the men's doubles alongside Marc Lopez because of a hamstring strain in his right leg.

"From the baseline he has very good slice, and with the forehand he can have a very good shot.

"I think I played for moments very good tennis, very good forehands. I played much better than the previous days with my forehand. That's a very positive thing."

He said he plans to return to Spain for a few days of relaxation before returning to London for Wimbledon, which begins on 21 June.

American Sam Querrey booked his place in the last four following a straight sets 6-3 7-5 win over Xavier Malisse.

Querrey will play the winner of the quarter-final between Germany's Rainer Schuettler and Israel's 14th seed Dudi Sela.
