Robson went out in chilly conditions at the Edgbaston Priory Club |
British teenager Laura Robson put up a valiant fight before falling 7-5 6-4 to third seed Yanina Wickmayer at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham. Robson, 16, came through qualifying before winning her first WTA Tour match in the opening round but world number 16 Wickmayer proved too strong. Maria Sharapova joined Wickmayer in the third round after a rain-delayed 6-0 6-3 win over Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Robson's compatriot Anne Keothavong lost 6-2 6-4 to top seed Li Na. Keothavong's defeat ended British interest in the singles at Edgbaston's Priory Club. The British number three, world-ranked 155, saw off Pauline Parmentier in three sets on Wednesday, but found world number 11 Li a step too far. The tournament has been beset by rain delays, meaning the second round was only completed on Thursday and players could be asked to play two matches in a day. Sharapova, the second seed and a two-time champion in Birmingham, was leading 4-0 when the rain came on Wednesday but returned on Thursday to complete a comprehensive victory over American Mattek-Sands.
