On a gloriously sunny day at Roland Garros, the 2010 French Open gets under way in front of burgeoning crowds on the Phillippe Chatrier court, with expectation levels high for an entertaining fortnight
The opening match on Court Phillippe Chatrier sees Sorana Cirstea take on Russian defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, and the Romanian takes an early 3-0 lead
But Kuznetsova, despite entering the tournament on the back of a torrid run of form, battles back on her way to a comfortable 6-3 6-1 victory that sees her into the second round at Roland Garros
Over on Court Suzanne Lenglen, meanwhile, Marin Cilic is the first man to secure a place in the second round, the 10th seed shaking off a second-set wobble to storm to a 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-1 victory over Brazilian Ricardo Mello
And he is quickly followed into the second-round draw by last year's runner-up Robin Soderling after the Swede completely outclasses French wildcard Laurent Recouderc 6-0 6-2 6-3 on Phillippe Chatrier
France's Julien Benneteau is in fine form on home soil and manages to book his place in the second round after 23rd seed Ernests Gulbis retires while trailing 6-4 6-2 1-0
Anne Keothavong is the first Briton in action but she struggles in the Parisian heat and falls to a 6-2 6-2 defeat to Italian 14th seed Flavia Pennetta
Second seed Venus Williams manages to progress to the second round with a 6-3 6-3 win over Patty Schnyder - completing 11 wins out of 11 against the experienced Swiss player
French eighth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has to come through a titanic battle with unfancied German Daniel Brands on Court Phillippe Chatrier, eventually winning in five sets 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-7 (2-7) 7-5 to reach round two
