Smith takes over with GB one defeat from the lowest tier of the Davis Cup |
Andy Murray's former coach Leon Smith is set to be named the next captain of the Great Britain Davis Cup team. BBC Sport understands that the Scot will succeed John Lloyd and take charge for July's relegation play-off with Turkey in Eastbourne. The Lawn Tennis Association refused to confirm the appointment but it is expected to headline an internal review into last month's defeat in Lithuania. Smith is believed to have beaten former player Greg Rusedski to the job. Rusedski, the bookies' favourite, had the support of several players who made their opinions known to the LTA but the governing body was keen to promote an internal candidate who did not have a "celebrity" tag. LTA chief executive Roger Draper effectively ruled out Rusedski three weeks ago when he said it was a great opportunity for an up-and-coming British coach. Rusedski may see himself in that category as captain of the junior Davis Cup team and mentor to James Ward, but Draper's words suggested a different direction. | 606: DEBATE |
Smith and Colin Beecher were subsequently mentioned as candidates but BBC Sport understands that Smith was the only serious contender to challenge Rusedski. He retains a strong relationship with compatriot Murray, with whom he worked when the player was aged 11 until 16, and that will be crucial in trying to persuade the nation's number one to play in future ties. Murray was consulted but stopped short of making a personal recommendation. A coach will also be appointed to work alongside Smith, although there appear very few possible candidates. Dave Sammel, former coach to a host of British players including Martin Lee, is one of several people to have been sounded out for the role.
